It had been many moons since they had felt safe enough to attempt a night time hunt. When Scar was King the hyena mainly had their hunts at night which left the pride with day time. Day time was always a harder experience for any predator let alone large one's that had no where to hide. Now that the Circle of Life had been restored they could resume some normal activities. Sarabi had decided earlier that day that it was a good day to hunt. Normally she would wait for Nala to take the lead since she was the reigning Queen, but the younger lioness had recently given birth. She wasn't overstepping her authority in the Pride since she was a long time hunt chief. During the long hot afternoon she had mentioned the idea of a hunt to most of the other lionesses in the pride.
She wasn't sure who was going to actually join her this evening. Honestly she hoped everyone did show, it would be good for them. A way to bond together as a family. Ever since Scar had died and Simba returned their had been so tension among the lions. She wasn't the only one to notice the weird behavior, but no one else seemed concerned. Sarabi was concerned about the rift between the pride members. The last thing they needed was some sort of civil war.
Heavy foot steps carried her quietly towards Mapema Rock, a gathering place that she had used for many hunts throughout the years. Keeping a low profile the former Queen came upon the rock and quickly jumped onto the still warm surface. There was excitement brewing in her blood, the hunt always brought her a thrill. Silently she sat and waited for the other hunters to arrive so they could begin talking about what would be the target and who was going to do what. ((A hunt thread for anyone who wishes to join may. Consider it to be a group activtiy.))

| ÆŹ Î M Î Heavy paws thwumped upon the moist earth of the marshlands, amber eyes flashing neath hooded brows. Another day, another hunt. A soft sigh escaped her lips as she picked her way through a well worn path. This wasnât her first excursion down this path, nor will it be her last; if they Kings willed it anyway. Behind her trailed two other bodies. One greatly mirrored her own, though a few shades darker than her own tawny pelt. Tama curved her neck to the side to get a glance back at her mother, Taamu. The older lioness was still in her prime, but Tamaâs keen eyes could tell the subtle differences that age dusted upon the lioness.
Bringing up the rear was a youngling. Yolandi. Though still barely an adolescent, it was high time the trainee shadowed them on a hunt. Tonightâs ritual was the perfect example to show her. Besides, it wasnât like she was going to be an active participant. Tama had told the young one before they left the Water Hole that her job was to watch them from afar and to not get entangled with the hunt itself.
âDid you stretch enough before we left Mama? I donât want you over extending or pulling something.â A soft chuckle resonated from her chest at the face her mother replied with. Tama flicked her tail tuft, gently brushing Taamuâs tuft from her forehead. Looking back past her mother, she eyed up little Yolandi. âDonât be nervous child. Just remember, keep to the edges and out of the lionesses way. I know itâs your first hunt, but youâll be fine. Who knows, after this one we may let you actively Join us.â
Returning her gaze forward, her face grew grim at the sight of Mapema Rock in the distance. She always hated the hunt, the whole ritual. It was a shame that she happened to be born lion, and not elephant or some other majestic beast. In order for her survival, she needed to sacrifice another in itâs place. Itâs barbaric and unfair. But the whole circle of life thing had to happen. She accepted her fate as well as any other lion did.
As the sun grew heavier in the sky, the trio of females finally reached their meeting place. There, the Queen Mother sat. Tama watched with a smile as Taamu brushed past her and rubbed her head against Sarabiâs. Next it was her turn, a soft purr rumbling deep within as she greeted the retired Queen. âEvening your majesty.â She sidestepped to allow Yolandi to do the same, yet arched a brow curiously as the youngest one simply bowed her head low instead of rubbing Sarabiâs head. She was an odd one, that girl.
Shaking her head slightly, she turned back to the Queen Mother. â I wasnât sure if you had a target picked out today, but Mama and I heard some information at the Water Hole this afternoon.â She eased her rump to the ground as she continued on. â Thurston let it be known that one of his elder mares had badly sprained a hoof this morning when they were frolicking in the plains.â That fool of a zebra had no notion of discreetness when it came to complaining. Her amber eyes swept the horizon, keeping a lookout for any other lionesses coming to join the hunt.

Tags n|a Words 324 Notes n|a | Y Ï É Î± Éł Ô Îč A nervous sigh slipped from pale lips as Tama attempted to comfort her. Unfortunately, the lionesses words did little to soothe the pre-teen. Tonight was the night. It was her first time on a hunt, and whilst not officially participating, she was still uneasy as fuck. She didnât want to make a fool of herself, or worse the pride. Knowing her, she would trip and alert the prey of their position or something stupid. Dusty tuft flicked back and forth as she followed the two generations toward the meeting place. âYes Tama. I know. I promise to not be a distraction tonight. Thereâs only so much to learn by words, witnessing a hunt is the only real way to learn.â
Yolandi listened to the lionesses fawn over each other. Tama making sure Taamu was alight, and Taamu trying to remember if Tama was able to find a companion for Tiifu while they were away. She rolled her eyes at the conversation. No one ever wondered about her like that. Gotta love the life of an unwanted orphan. Her periwinkle eyes filled with a tinge of jealousy as she looked the females up and down. So thatâs was a caring family looks like. Grandmother and Mother, together on a hunt while daughter was ensured safe at home. Disgusting.
She shook her head as they continued on, Yolandi blowing her tuft from her eyes as they reached Mapema Rock. She watched the other two greet Sarabi by rubbing their heads to hers. She pulled her head back in a cringe as she watched. Affection.. Gross. When it was her turn, she glanced at the other two before curling in her left arm and bowing her front half low. âYour majesty..â Once she straightened, she caught the look Tama gave her. She pinned her ears back gently and stepped to the side to not be dragged into the conversation of who they were to be hunting tonight.

It had been a fair while since Umeme had actively participated in a hunt with her pride. While she would never claim to be rusty, it was an unfortunate fact of her life that working with others didn't come naturally to her. Oh she loved her pride sisters, every single one of them. Even the more cantankerous ones. But Umeme thrived when she didn't have to worry about where others were positioned or watching for a signal.
But, alas, hunting together was a time honored tradition, especially when it was a youngling's first time accompanying the hunt. Umeme couldn't say she knew Yolandi very well, but she couldn't say she knew most of her pridemates well either. From close by but not quite joined with the other lionesses, she watched her elders greet each other with affectionate nuzzles and Yolandi bow. It wasn't that odd, all things considered. Maybe the thought of treating the former queen with such casualness weirded her out or made her uncomfortable.
Umeme finally approached the quartet and dipped her head to all of them, even Yolandi. Just because she was younger didn't mean she wasn't any more deserving of respect. She joined Yolandi to the side to let the others discuss their targets for the night and glanced over at the younger lioness. She wondered if Yolandi was nervous about her first hunt. Umeme's own had been... not exactly thrilling, considering it had been at the start of Scar's reign. This wasn't something gestures alone could convey, and Umeme spoke. "You'll do fine. Trust yourself and trust us."

Nakala had arrived with Sarabi, tagging along with her aunt with tense anticipation. Now, lying in the darkening shadow of Mapema Rock, Nakala listened to the others join their growing hunting party. Taamu, Tama, and Yolandi arrived first, Tama teasing her mother lightheartedly and reminding Yolandi to pay attention and not get in the way. Nakala nodded to herself, reminding her of the same thing. She and Yolandi were around the same age, after all, and this would be more of an observation for the both of them than real hunting practice. The talk turned to logistics and Nakala let her mind wander, eyes adjusting quickly to the darkening sky.
She knew she would need to make her presence known to the others soon, so as not to startle them. Stretching, Nakala rose from the far side of the rock and slinked up it's smooth surface, leaning her body into Sarabi's as she joined the conversation. Her soft voice was tinged with a smile, but still shook slightly with nerves; "Good evening Taamu, Tama. Yolandi." As she finished her greeting, Umeme came upon the group, keeping her distance like always. Nakala was surprised when she spoke, but it was just a quiet reassurance to Yolandi, not a whole-group message. Averting her eyes to let the older lionesses know she would not interrupt, Nakala listened to them discuss the prey of the night.

How different the pridelands were with balance restored. When Mufasa had been king she'd been part of many successful hunts. The pride had never gone hungry and between her and her pride-sisters everyone had thrived. But Scar's reign had been different. Forced to hunt during the day, they had struggled and as the prey had dwindled things had become more and more difficult. She'd often accompanied Zira on long-range hunts to try and ensure everyone was fed, but even then food had been scarcer than anyone could have been comfortable with. Now Simba had returned the lands were healing and the prey returned but they had to be careful. They could not hunt as once they might, so larger prey was preferred - usually older animals who were weaker and closer to their natural end.
Her tail twitched as she spotted Sarabi in the distance, already joined by several others. This boded well, she knew that Sarabi was hoping the hunt might heal some of the cracks in the pride. Honestly, she wasn't so convinced it would work. She had seen the way Zira sneered at any mention of her daughter or the king and while she'd tried to be understanding at first it was becoming an increasing issue. It was a shame, for the lioness had shown her determination to help the pride in the past. But it seemed the slender ess had yet to show her face - had she even heard about the hunt? She was so rarely seen in the main dens.
The distance between her and the others closed and she moved to stand beside her friend. "Sarabi, pridesisters, it is good to see you all." she spoke warmly. She didn't voice her concerns, she knew to do so would only doom the whole attempt.

When Sarabi had mentioned the hunt to her, Zira had not committed to showing up. Even though she was officially a huntress in the pride she had felt unwelcome among them since she had returned. Of all the lionesses she had tried to support as queen, Sarabi had been one of the few who'd tried to reach out to her. She understood the pain she carried, and she hadn't exactly pressured her to attend either. But as the day had passed, the slender ess had grown more frustrated with herself. Why should she avoid the hunt? She was a member of this pride and she'd done nothing wrong. She just had a different opinion to many of the other lionesses. So it was that she made her way across the pridelands to meet with the others.
When she arrived she dipped her head quietly to Sarabi, completely ignoring Sarafina. The traitor queen's mother was nobody she really wanted to associate with. She might have been a good huntress, but she couldn't pretend not to dislike the other's child and the friction between them had been growing for some time. Her red eyes crossed the others who were here, too, and she offered a nod to those as well. It wouldn't do to punish them for the crime of the others. She barely knew them - especially the youngest - but she would at least try to be civil. After all, how else was she to sway minds?

Sabini was at the age where she could participate in a hunt being a young adult, she would be able to handle it by now. She got up that morning a little bit late, she feared she had slept in accidentally. It was unlike her too. The golden lioness got up and went for a quick drink and some food enough to sustain herself on a hunt. As it would be a good idea to eat lightly along the way or loose yourself to sleeping. She pawed forward in the ground and began to make her way to the scent of other lions gathering. Sabini was amazed and in awe she had never seen so many lionesses in one place. Hunting was a matter of tradition here, and she hoped to put her place in the other lionesses.
Still Sabini couldn't help but wonder, how many could hunt together? With personality traits that were all different. Some who hated it. Some who seemed reluctant to be there. Sabini didn't know where she stood. On common ground perhaps? She felt a bit of nervousness hit her as she knew some of these lionesses were far more skilled than she was. She just had to remember what her mother taught her and what she had learned on her own. Maybe her skills would be tested here.
Sabini finally spoke, she was used to being ignored.... Her whole life had been in the shadows a little bit mysterious at the same time. The shy lioness gathered up her courage to speak up towards the others. "Hello everyone. I hope I am not too late." Sabini said. "I see a few familiar facees. And some new ones." Sabini said as she took a stand near the other lionesses. She smelled many animal scents, but the one that seemed promising at this point appeared to be zebra. That would do nicely. She found herself full of butterflies, with some excitement and some nervousness. Somewhere in between.

Though she was the last to arrive, Udiri seemed the most enthused about the hunt compared to her fellow younger lionesses. She was still younger than Sabini of course, closer in age to Nakala and Yolandi. Like them, she would be observing but she was getting up there in age to learn how to properly hunt rather than just fishing.
Not every lion handled water well enough to learn that skill.
âEvening everyone!â Her soft toned, somewhat raspy voice carried on the wind before she came trotting up towards the gathering hunters sensing the usual awkward tension among them but trying not to let it sour her mood. Compared to her pride-sisters, Udiri seemed to blend in perfectly to the growing shadows being cast by the evening dimness of the sun going down. In a different way, she stood out among the tawny and tan pelts compared to Yolandiâs much lighter tones. But, her violet eyes sparkled with excitement, the thrill of getting to go and observe a proper hunt causing energy to surge through her body like lightning streaking across the sky. But, the young lioness reminded herself to keep her energy in check, quickly bowing her head respectfully towards Sarabi who was leading this hunt.
But the one thing Udiri was the most eager for was someday actually going on her solo hunt to prove she was an able hunter. That was her desire after all, to be the best or good enough to honor her motherâs memory. Kanzi may not be there physically to teach her and encourage her, but she knew her spirit would always be there every step of the way.

It didn't take very long for the hunters to begin arriving at the designated spot. Sarabi was always curious as to who would show up when these large hunts were organized. All were invited but rarely did the entire pride show. Glancing back at Nakala she offered the young lioness a gentle smile. She had a close bond with the young lioness and saw her more like a daughter then just a pride member. The first to arrive was Tama and her mother Taamu, both of which were experienced hunters. Sarabi greeted Taamu with open affection and care, her nuzzles rather enthusiastic as a deep rumble shook her chest. Next she nudged Tama and gave the lioness a smile. As she side stepped the golden ess exposed a young lioness, a huntress in training. For a moment she was unsure of the young female's name, rolling the various hunters over in her mind she remembered. "Yolandi welcome."
Sarabi noticed the look that was given and how the trainee moved off to the side to let the experienced hunters talk. There had been a few cubs she had never managed to get to know, and it saddened her. Yolandi had been a orphan and the pride had taken her in, but no one had claimed the poor girl. Her ears twitched soundlessly as Tama began speaking about some news she had over heard. A zebra was wounded? That would be a perfect target for this hunt, nothing to dangerous but still hard enough to teach a lesson of some kind. "Has she calved this year? If she has a young one with her we need to spare her tonight.." She wasn't about to kill a mother.
Umeme came next, and bowed as well. "Good evening Umeme." Sarabi stated simply and listened to the lionesses talk among themselves. It was good that the pride was offering Yolandi some support. It would seem Nakala had decided to join in the conversation. She heard her before she spoke. As the young girl leaned into her, she nuzzled her deeply and licked the top of her head a few times. Sarafina was next to arrive, which brought a joy to her heart. They had hunted together so many times in the past, along with Taamu. So many memories were shared between them.
"Good evening Sarafina. How is Nala and cubs faring this evening?" Sarabi asked her softly, inquiring about her grandcubs. Kiara was growing into a fine princess, and someday she'd make a wonderful Queen. As for Kion he was only a wee little thing but already showed much promise. She adored him as any grandmother should.
Honestly, she was surprised when Zira came. She hadn't expected her to show up, but was certainly glad she did. All she wanted was for her to be a part of the family again, which was easier said then done. The old Queen liked to believe that things would work themselves out in due time. "I'm glad you decided to come Zira." Sarabi said warmly with a slight nod of her head.
Next came Sabini, a shy female but still a good member of the pride.A reliable hunter. Her ears twitched as she spoke. "Indeed we have a large hunting party tonight, come and meet everyone." She beckoned her closer. Another came from the brush a female named Udiri. A rather large group but that helped the odds be in their favor. Now they just needed to make a final decision on a target and get it all started.

| ÆŹ Î M Î A soft smile curved her lips as Tama witnessed the arrival of the others. Umeme, Nakala, Sarafina and Sabini. Udiri too. Good. This is just what the pridesisters needed. She greeted them all warmly, stepping forth to rub heads in familiarity. That is, until she arrived. Amber eyes flashed with wariness as Zira joined the posse. She wasnât going to lie, Tama had secretly hoped to the Kings that she wouldnât come. Manners demanded that Zira be acknowledged though, so the tawny female dipped her head in a hello. But her keen eyes also saw the look of disappointment flashed her way by her mother. Tama flicked her ears about on her head, mentally brushing her motherâs concerns away. She didnât know how Taamu could be so cordial with the very lioness that defended their abuser until his death. A shiver swept down her spine as memories of Before seeped into her thoughts. Stop it!
She quickly shoved those visions deep down and tried to refocus upon the present. It seemed everyone was wishing the younglings comfort in tonightâs trial. There were three of them this evening; Nakala, Udiri and Yolandi. Perfect. The three girls would have each other, three different perspectives and can learn from one another aside from the lionesses. At Sarabiâs questions, she snapped back to attention.
âNo I donât believe so. If I remember right, she is past her prime foaling years. I personally didnât get a look at her, but you know how Thurston likes to tell one and all anything thatâs ever happened to him and his haremâŠâ Tama then looked to her mother who then spoke up after. âSarabi, itâs Ndiliswa. Sheâs a great aunt of his one of his mares, Nobomi.â Tama was impressed of her motherâs memory. But then again, she hadnât been paying 100% attention to others at the Water Hole today.
She glanced at Zira from the corner of her eyes for a moment before lifting her head to search the horizon for other late arrivals. âNo Kula tonight I see. Or anyone else for the matter. ShameâŠ"

| Y Ï É Î± Éł Ô Îč The lionesses just kept on coming. The party growing larger and larger. Pale ears swiveled about her head with nervousness. She could barely hold conversations one on one, how the fuck was she gonna handle a crowd? Oh she couldnât wait for the hunt to begin already. Then everyone would have to be silent and a lot easier to deal with. She forced a smile to Umeme and her kind words. She bowed toward the female much like she did for Sarabi. âThank you, I will try.â She murmured softly, her tail now curving about her paws in an attempt to soothe herself. Youâre gonna be okay. At least itâs not the whole pride right now, just the huntresses.
As each new lioness arrived, Yolandi solicited her awkward bow, even to Zira. She didnât understand why some of the others acted the way they did around Zira. She never saw any issue with the striped female. She actually akinned their feelings toward her the same as the pride felt toward Yolandi. No one really knew what to do with her, and she felt like they also didnât know what to do with Zira.
Her ears slowly worked their way down upon her head, hanging low and floppy. Come onnn. Stop your yammering and lets go already! She silently urged toward Sarabi and Tama. She didnât get why they didnât just go out tracking a prey victim. That particular skill she was still working on herself. The pride knew that Thurstonâs herd typically hung around Chakula Plains. Why arenât they just heading there now? She shifted her paws as she waited as patiently as she could.

With each lioness that appeared, Umeme gave them either a friendly blink or a dip of the head. Except Zira, who Umeme did both for. The dip of the head was a little deeper than for the other non-royal lionesses too. Regardless of current pride politics, Zira had once been a queen too, and Umeme would treat her as such.
She listened as her elders discussed who to hunt, and the fact that they'd be going after a zebra whose name was known, who they might have had a past conversation with, didn't sit well with her. Why had Taamu named the zebra? Now Umeme wouldn't be able to eat without picturing the zebra's family in mourning.
Oh well. She'd still hunt with her pridesisters and do her part. It just meant she'd have to hunt for herself later.

Nakala continued to slightly lean into Sarabi, grateful that she was the one to take the reigns. She was surprised when Zira, her stepmother, came to join the hunting party, but bit back a greeting as more lionesses arrive. It was quickly growing into a large group, which Nakala appreciated - more huntresses meant a smaller percentage of failure, and the pride needed all of the food it could get. While they had permission to hunt in the Backlands and neighboring kingdoms while the Pridelands grew back to its former strength, the huntresses were re-learning how to hunt within the Circle of Life, and respect the land they lived in. The young lioness sighed softly, her lime green eyes scanning the large group around her. It would be a very good lesson for her and the other juveniles; many talented huntresses were here, and some of them did not get along socially - it would be interesting to see how they communicated during the hunt. Curiosity sparked within her and she smiled a little wider, trying to grow more comfortable with the large group. Social events had always been difficult for Nakala, especially now that her father wasn't here for others to have a reason to speak to her. When she had been a 'princess', lionesses had paid attention. Now she was no one. The orange pelted lioness perked at the talk of the zebra. Of course, they would respect the Circle of Life, and only take what nature was offering. If she was truly elderly and injured, then it would be the best choice for both the pride and the zebra herd to take her. While it was awkward to think about, it was also a necessary part of the Circle of Life, and Nakala would need to learn to separate feelings from needs if she were to become a stronger huntress. Taamu confirmed that the mare was foal-less for the season, and Nakala nodded as she thought about the hunt and took in all the information she could. Anxiety buzzed deep within her, her stomach doing somersaults in preparation for the directions she knew would follow the confirmation of their quarry. "Where should we observe from, Sarabi?" she asked quietly, wanting to make sure she and the other junior huntresses were not in the way one things got started. sarafina

Sarafina smiled as Sarabi asked after Nala and the cubs - so much of her world enveloped in that one sentence. "They are well, thank you Sarabi. Nala is a wonderful mother, and the cubs are growing quickly although you know my daughter, she is not good at allowing herself time to rest." It was a trait which had only grown more apparent since she had become queen - Nala just wanted to get moving, when really she should have been giving herself time to recover from birth.
She did her best not to huff when Zira appeared. Had Sarabi invited her? Why? The former queen was insane, always going on about Scar and how the rest of the pride had painted him so badly as if she had not seen the damage he had done. Not to mention anything else. Still, her eyes narrowed and she offered little more than a nod of greeting. If Zira was here, the chances of things turning bad in this hunt only increased and she didn't really want to tempt fate.
Sabini came next, and her gaze once more softened as she chuffed out a greeting. Maybe things would go smoothly after all. There were several talented huntresses here and if Zira behaved she too was not one to be overlooked for skill. Finally, Udiri also joined them. So there were several young huntresses ready to start contibuting their part to the pride. That was a blessing in itself. Talk turned to potential prey - an older zebra who had recently been injured seemed like the perfect target.
"Well, it seems we have a target at least. Well done, there may even be lead huntress material in you." She tried to encourage the younger lioness in regards to the information she had brought. Of course, information wasn't all they needed but her hopes for this hunt was growing. She looked to Sarabi, waiting for guidance on what they would do now.
