Honestly the questions made her realize that this would end up being a nice teaching lesson, one that didn't have to come off as such. With a soft sigh the lioness moved towards the shade of a nearby tree. The shade made her feel much more comfortable and she hoped the cubs would join her so she could properly explain everything. At least the best way she knew how to do. "The Circle of life effects us all, we are all connected to each other.. even if we don't see it that way. The prey animals provide us with food which keeps us and the other predators alive. After we finish eating the scavengers come and clean up the rest of the bones. Nothing is wasted. When we die we are eaten by scavengers and then the rest of our body goes into the earth which then produces grass for the prey animals to eat. It is a endless cycle and no one is truly above anyone else."
Sarabi told them softly, unsure if talking of death was the smartest thing to be doing right now. Some cubs handled really well and others had nightmares. In due time everyone had to come to accept how the world worked. "When Scar was the ruler of this land he decided to not abide by the laws of nature. He allowed the hyenas to over hunt the prey animals. Which in turn caused the herds to disappear--- and in time the grass and leaves died as well. The water stopped flowing and our lives became nothing but chaos." She swallowed slowly, trying to ignore the weird lump around in her throat. It was obvious that she had not grieved properly.
"As for what Ma'at was trying to explain.. If there were no predators then the prey animals would eat up all of their food. Their numbers would explode and all of them would eventually starve to death. Our purpose is to keep their herds healthy by taking the sick, injured, and weak. It keeps everything in some sort of balance." She licked her lips for a moment, thinking of what else needed to be talked about. Oh yes. "I teach all of my students about being kind. When you hunt and catch a animal, a quick death is the best thing you can offer them. A bite to the windpipe or clamping the nose shut does it rather fast. Spinal bites are for smaller animals that you can pierce with ease. To not do these things is cruel.
Of course cruelty is also a part of nature. Some do not care how they kill.--- but I ask you this little cubs. Would you rather be snuffed out quickly or be tortured? Most would love to die fast."
Her eyes shifted between the three cubs, hoping that her talk hadn't caused them any issues. It was never a easy thing talking about life and death.

Of course she had been aware of the cubs following her for quite some time, she was a expert hunter after all. She loved the company of young lions and was often referred as the resident grandmother due to her loving nature. Sarabi had adopted plenty of cubs in her life time, due to a variety of reasons. During the dark time when Scar reigned she had adopted even more orphans due to the surge in death of the pride. Also more lions had abandoned their cubs at the borders during those times. She had saved so many from the hungry jaws of the hyena, even though the pride was barely surviving as it were. Though she hated to admit it, her own issues helped her want to take on any cub she found. She had felt so much guilt for Simba's death and now his life... it seemed to consume her. This day was new different, unfortunately more cubs were abandoned and she was left to care for them. Not that she minded.
Her tail tip flickered to and fro as she heard the cubs come bursting from the undergrowth only to attack her. Smashing his head into her chin and ears, a laugh escaped her as she swirled a bit. Trying to knock him down without much success. The attack didn't last very long as the cub claimed victory and mentioned a spinal bite. Sarabi felt the smile pull across her face as she looked at the two boys before her. The more reserved of the two Maji approached and made a comment about a throat bite. Ah, perhaps she could teach them a small lesson.
"Most of the time a throat bite is preferred as is a nose clamp. You'll have to be a big and mighty lion to attempt to break a spinal cord. That and such a thing is frowned upon due to the fact that it only paralyzes the animal and doesn't kill it. You have to be mindful of prey and try to make death as swift as possible. There is never a need to make another suffer to fill your own belly." Sarabi told them both, her expression serious for a moment to try and make that message stick in their heads. Her red eyes looked the boys over and she felt her heart tug a bit. Seeing how un kept they looked it made her heart feel sad. Perhaps they would let her groom them today and get those nasty mats out of their fur.
Just as she was about to suggest such a thing, a third cub joined them. She had seen this one around as well. He had been taken in by a new shaman in the pride a lioness named Ma'at. Sarabi didn't know her well but it seemed like he was taken care of for the most part. Of course he could always need a groom as well. "Hello Baraka, how are you doing today?" He was a rather soft spoken cub and it always made her smile when he tried to be social.
Looking between the three boys she couldn't help but laugh, indeed it would seem the great Kings had blessed her with company this day. She moved suddenly and without warning, her jaws clamping down on Moto's scruff. With a soft grunt she heaved the cub towards the springs but dropping him into the cool water. Laughing as she did so. "Another lesson my young hunter, never take your eyes off of your prey." She danced away and watched the three young lions.
She remembered how she used to bring Simba and Nala here when they were cubs, how she would knock her son into this same spring. That was one of the reasons why he still loved to swim today as a adult. Sarabi unlike most of her kind loved water, and she would always take a swim when given a chance to do so. Today was no different. Shaking her fur with a sway of her hips the lioness gracefully waded into the spring enjoying the cold water against her hot skin.
"Well now what?" She asked with a soft chuckle.

The African heat was never something to mess with, and she for certain had learned that particular lesson quite a few times in her life time. At least now the pride wasn't being forced to hunt all hours of the day and night. They could afford to relax and actually enjoy the beauty that was all around them. She had missed having time to just relax and feel at peace. Sarabi had woken up early to try and attempt a early morning hunt, but they had failed to bring down anything. Which meant they would have to try again when the sun finally set and darkness took the heat away. Although this also meant she had plenty of time to do whatever now before the evening hunt started. Her feet carried her quietly towards a familiar destination. The newly renamed Hukana Matata falls, it was a beautiful spot to relax.
It brought her so much joy to see it green again, during the Shadow Times it had all but died. Only a small trickle of water had flowed from the falls, and it had been the saving grace for many animals that were dying. She hadn't visited this place since her son had come back home. Rumor had it this was where her son's foster family now lived. Timon and Pumba called this little paradise home. Sarabi had never been one to pick favorites but they had done the pride a great service and so she had left it go. Besides sometimes the old ways were best forgotten.
As she arrived, she looked around for a moment. Some of the animals bowed and murmured greetings. "Hello Sarabi.. " "Good afternoon Queen Mother.." She said hello to each and everyone of them before she finally came to a stop by the falls. Dipping her head, she got a nice long cool drink, enjoying the feeling of the water flowing down her throat. Water was such a treasure. Once she filled her belly to the brim with the precious liquid she looked for a place to lounge.

She continued to groom her daughters face, ears, and neck in long soothing motions. All these changes had been hard on everyone, and deep down she hoped her daughter was okay. Sarabi knew Kanoni hadn't been very close with her father, but he was still her dad. She was also very aware that a lot of lions were beginning to voice their concerns about the future of the pride. Almost half of the pride were grieving for Scar, and felt like their feelings were not being heard. There had been a few occasions were various pride members had almost come to blows over it. Sarabi was unsure as to how long the tension would remain before someone got hurt. Finishing her grooming for a moment she looked at her daughter for a long moment. She was growing up so fast, and it made Sarabi long for to be a mother again. Mother hood had come naturally to her and she hoped to someday have more cubs. Sure she was a older lioness but she wasn't elderly nor was she sickly. There was plenty of time to have more cubs before she became to feeble.
But that was a conversation for another time. As her daughter asked her that particular question she smiled just a bit. The idea of her girl finding a mate and perhaps having a family of her own was pleasant. Her ears flickered silently as she heard bats flying overhead. "Well that's a complicated answer. I've never experienced a young love at least in a normal sense. I was engaged to Mufasa from early on in my life. Barely a few months old and already my future was decided for me." Sarabi told her softly with a slight roll of her shoulders. She had never known what choice was, it had been decided before she had a chance to say other wise.
"Now I did grow to love Mufasa as we got older. He was charming and very kind towards me. He would bring me flowers and take me on dates where we could be alone. It was a very special time in my life. Then I became his Queen and we had your brother Simba." Her mind drifted back to her teenaged years, where Mufasa had been the light in her life. He had brought her such joy. It honestly was hard to accept that he was gone, even though it had been years.
Her smile turned slightly sad. "Then your father became King and had decided to embrace the old ways. The way of the wild world. He decided to breed with every available female in the pride to produce his heir. We all fell pregnant with a few months of him assuming the throne. There was no love in that relationship Kanoni. Sometimes in life you would have to do things you are not comfortable with." Sarabi looked out over the kingdom that had once been hers, getting lost in the darkness for a moment.
"But I got you out of that. You are my treasure. To answer your question my honey tree, just be yourself. Be open and be honest with anyone you want to date. Have a open mind and a open heart. I'm sure you'll find who your meant to be with eventually." Sarabi gave her a gentle nuzzle and relaxed on the cool rocky surface. Her mind was a million miles away.

She knew deep down that it wasn't right to feel the way she did right now. Being upset at Simba for being the way he was. Being upset and mad all the time, it was no one's fault. If anything she should be mad at life itself. It was Scar who had destroyed her perfect little family and made her own life so difficult. He had done it so he could rule the Kingdom, and his jealous nature was why she had lost her first born. One eye opened to look at her son, just taking this moment in for what it was. He seemed so young, so innocent still. It made her eyes prickle with tears. Ignoring them she smiled softly and glanced back at the paintings on the wall.
"Why don't you join me? Come and lay beside your mother." She suggested softly with that soft loving smile firmly on her face. It would be nice to just have a moment alone with her son. To just embrace the idea of him being home again and not only that for blessing her with grandcubs. Two precious little babies. The future of their large pride. Sarabi watched him for a moment longer before relaxing there on the cool stone floor. It was nice to just have some privacy for a little while.
"Well?" She questioned him again and waited to see what he was going to do.

Comfortable silence was something she had always loved. She remembered so many precious moments in her life. How she used to snuggle against her own mother and sisters during her infantcy. The beautiful warmth of the den, the feeling of safety that only parents seemed to provide. Sarabi only experienced that a few more times in her life, when she had married her soul mate Mufasa. The den they had a shared had been one of intimacy and love, it was something she still missed. When she had Simba had been another beautiful moment in her life, watching her newborns first moments. Then again when she finally had another cub, her precious daughter. The one that lay beside her on this chilly African night, both of them gazing at the stars. It made her heart clench as she glanced over at Kanoni, just taking this quiet moment all in.
"The hunt was fine, but I am quickly becoming tired of leading them. It shouldn't be my job alone to do so. Unfortunately I am unsure how to actually bring up the subject to your brother and his mate. I'm trying to have patience and understanding due to the circumstances."
Sarabi did not enjoy being away from her daughter all the time. It was a mother's duty to teach her daughters all she knew so they could survive. She sometimes felt like she was running out of time to teach Kanoni her secrets. The secrets that had been passed down by many generations. She sighed heavily, almost a sad sound. With each dawn her baby girl was growing up, and she was growing older. It was hard to believe sometimes that she was already a grandmother. Honestly, she wasn't that old. Most lionesses were still having cubs at her age.
Often she dreamed of that, having more offspring of her own. Even if her mate was long dead. She desired the bonds of mother hood. "What have you been doing as of late? Have you been going to your lessons?" Sarabi asked her curiously, hoping that Kanoni was doing just that.
Subtly she moved a bit closer to her daughter and began to wash her neck and back of her ears. The rhythm of grooming lulled her into a sense of calm and happiness. She was glad she was able to do this with her girl. "What's been on your mind?"

She noted with a sense of unease as the mood shifted just slightly. It was obvious to everyone there that Zira and Sarafina had their issues.. Honestly she was one of the few that was caught in the middle of the drama. She cared about Sarafina like she would a sister, but Zira was a dear friend of hers. They had grown tight during the shadow times, and to see the unease between them was hard to witness. Sarabi honestly knew in her heart that nothing good could come from this. A part of her had hoped that Nala would have come to lead the hunt which was one of her duties even if she didn't actually participate in the hunt. She was still doing a lot of the leg work that the new royal couple should be doing. It was something she hated to admit to but it is what it is. Her red eyes shifted tiredly between the various members of the hunting party.
A zebra was never a easy target, even if the individual in question was injured. The herd could very easily decide to defend their mare and ruin the hunt. They also had to question where to watch from. Sarabi thought long and hard on that question in particular. If anything this seemed to be the perfect opportunity to actually have the younger females be more involved in the hunt itself. If luck was on their side maybe they could take more then one zebra which would feed the entire pride. "More then likely the zebra herd will be grazing right now.. Typically they are in the Mbali fields at night time.. Which offers them some safety but it will also help us to stalk them easily with the rocks and trees to hide behind."
Sarabi stood on her perch and looked over each of the pride members, deciding who would be working with who. It was the hardest to pick between the very different personalities. "I am going to lead the first group. Umiri, Tama, Taamu, Sabini, and Yolandi will be in my group. The second group will be lead by Sarafina. Zira, Signe, Nakala, and Umeme are in that group. My group will be the stalkers and chasers, Sarafina's group will be the one's to bring the zebra down and make the kill."
She knew she was taking a very large risk with having Sarafina and Zira in the same hunting party. However, she wanted to make them work together like they used to. Maybe they would relax once they fell into a familiar pattern. She hoped it worked that way. With a flick of her tail the Queen Mother leapt off of her perch and landed silently. Keeping her tail raised slightly she continued to wave it about as she departed for the Mbali fields." She frowned slightly as she walked, eyes raised to ask the stars for their blessing this evening.
The pride desperately needed something to work, they needed to come together as a family. Sarabi kept silent as she walked, her senses listening to the night. Her ears twitched as she heard snorts and grunts off to the right. A large herd of water buffalo watched the pride with wary eyes. They were not commonly on the menu but it did happen on occasion. Sarabi paid them no mind.
Soon enough she stood at the beginning of the fields, waiting for the rest of the group to catch up with her. The Queen Mother was all business when it came to hunting, that normally kind expression was gone replaced by a look of calculation and predation.

Once more she had lead the hunt for the pride, and had been gone for most of the afternoon. Now that night was slowly creeping across the land, replacing the sun with shadow. The hunting party had managed to take down a rather large prize, a water buffalo. They rarely had the power to take on such a foe, but this time luck had been on their side. The pride would be able to feast for a few days on this one kill. Which meant tomorrow would be a day of relaxing and peace. It was something she was looking forward to enjoying. As of late, life in the pride had been hectic at best. Hunting, patrolling, teaching the young lionesses how to hunt proper, births of babies, and of course drama. The drama was the only thing that concerned her at the moment. She kept hearing of the tension rising between numerous groups in the pride. It was beginning to worry her that some of the lions in the pride didn't see her son as the King.
Simba was very new to the mantle of being a leader. He was learning how to be a proper King. However, he was rather brash in his decisions and didn't seem to know when to say he was sorry. It was something she had wanted to work on with him, but it was hard to even get time to see him. Between him and Nala having cubs of their own and his duties.. when did she ever fit into his daily life? Sarabi hated to admit it but she wasn't really a part of his life anymore. Sure he was her baby boy, but he wasn't a baby anymore. Simba was a fully grown lion that was raised by a warthog and a meerkat. He never experienced lion life. It had been stolen from him when he was a cub.
Entering the main den she looked around for her other cub, her daughter. A daughter she loved deeply even if she didn't like her father. Everyone had been required to try and produce a proper heir for Scar.. and she had given him a girl. A smart and beautiful girl. Seeing that she wasn't in the den, Sarabi frowned slightly. "She went up on the peak." Came a comment from one of her pride sisters. "Thank you." She responded softly and decided to follow her up onto the peak.
Sarabi knew this path really well, she had traveled it many times during her life time. She made sure to keep to the path, taking the climb easy so she wouldn't slip. Pulling herself up over the last step her red eyes immediately fell on her teenaged daughter. Up here all alone gazing at the stars. A loving smile crossed her face as she made her way over. "Daughter." She spoke softly to not spook the girl from her thoughts.
She could tell a lot was on her daughters mind. Sarabi approached and moved to settle herself beside her cub. Laying down beside her and gazing up to the stars. For the moment she didn't speak, instead she just enjoyed the quiet with someone she loved.

"Someday when you are older you will understand how nice boredom can actually be. You'll miss having nothing to do." Sarabi knew that as a fact. Her fondest memories were when she was a young cub, being able to play the day away. Then when she became betrothed to Mufasa her own father had begun lessons. She had to go and learn while all of her friends got to stay at home and play. There were many days she wished she could just snuggle up to her mom and nap the hot afternoon away. Then adult hood came and life changed again with marriage, and then the birth of her son Simba. Mother hood had been a whole different level of stress for her. It had been hard keeping the young prince contained, he wanted to explore the whole world.
Now he was a parent himself and Sarabi was a grandmother, which was a easier job but at the same time it was hard. It was hard not being able to make decisions regarding her family anymore. However, she knew that if Simba found out Kiara had snuck away from the Pride Rock again he'd be furious. So she'd say she was taking her out for a lesson and prevent the princess from getting in trouble with her dad. Bending the rules was okay as long as it wasn't a habit.
"No need to worry honey tree, your nana will just tell your dad that I took you out for the day. He'll never need to know anything else." Sarabi told her softly, before returning her thoughts to a important lesson the girl probably hadn't learned. She rolled the various lessons over in her mind and soon thought of one.
"I know what will be a good lesson for you my dear, I'm going to teach you how to hunt rabbits." She smiled at the idea. Normally a rabbit would be over looked by a large hunter such as a lion. However in lean times or during a drought, a rabbit was a fine meal for a hungry stomach. Sarabi also desired to teach her grandcubs how to fish properly. For now though she would stick with rabbits.
"Follow me honey tree." Sarabi called over her shoulder as she wandered into some brush, expecting Kiara to follow her.

It didn't take very long for the hunters to begin arriving at the designated spot. Sarabi was always curious as to who would show up when these large hunts were organized. All were invited but rarely did the entire pride show. Glancing back at Nakala she offered the young lioness a gentle smile. She had a close bond with the young lioness and saw her more like a daughter then just a pride member. The first to arrive was Tama and her mother Taamu, both of which were experienced hunters. Sarabi greeted Taamu with open affection and care, her nuzzles rather enthusiastic as a deep rumble shook her chest. Next she nudged Tama and gave the lioness a smile. As she side stepped the golden ess exposed a young lioness, a huntress in training. For a moment she was unsure of the young female's name, rolling the various hunters over in her mind she remembered. "Yolandi welcome."
Sarabi noticed the look that was given and how the trainee moved off to the side to let the experienced hunters talk. There had been a few cubs she had never managed to get to know, and it saddened her. Yolandi had been a orphan and the pride had taken her in, but no one had claimed the poor girl. Her ears twitched soundlessly as Tama began speaking about some news she had over heard. A zebra was wounded? That would be a perfect target for this hunt, nothing to dangerous but still hard enough to teach a lesson of some kind. "Has she calved this year? If she has a young one with her we need to spare her tonight.." She wasn't about to kill a mother.
Umeme came next, and bowed as well. "Good evening Umeme." Sarabi stated simply and listened to the lionesses talk among themselves. It was good that the pride was offering Yolandi some support. It would seem Nakala had decided to join in the conversation. She heard her before she spoke. As the young girl leaned into her, she nuzzled her deeply and licked the top of her head a few times. Sarafina was next to arrive, which brought a joy to her heart. They had hunted together so many times in the past, along with Taamu. So many memories were shared between them.
"Good evening Sarafina. How is Nala and cubs faring this evening?" Sarabi asked her softly, inquiring about her grandcubs. Kiara was growing into a fine princess, and someday she'd make a wonderful Queen. As for Kion he was only a wee little thing but already showed much promise. She adored him as any grandmother should.
Honestly, she was surprised when Zira came. She hadn't expected her to show up, but was certainly glad she did. All she wanted was for her to be a part of the family again, which was easier said then done. The old Queen liked to believe that things would work themselves out in due time. "I'm glad you decided to come Zira." Sarabi said warmly with a slight nod of her head.
Next came Sabini, a shy female but still a good member of the pride.A reliable hunter. Her ears twitched as she spoke. "Indeed we have a large hunting party tonight, come and meet everyone." She beckoned her closer. Another came from the brush a female named Udiri. A rather large group but that helped the odds be in their favor. Now they just needed to make a final decision on a target and get it all started.

It had been many moons since they had felt safe enough to attempt a night time hunt. When Scar was King the hyena mainly had their hunts at night which left the pride with day time. Day time was always a harder experience for any predator let alone large one's that had no where to hide. Now that the Circle of Life had been restored they could resume some normal activities. Sarabi had decided earlier that day that it was a good day to hunt. Normally she would wait for Nala to take the lead since she was the reigning Queen, but the younger lioness had recently given birth. She wasn't overstepping her authority in the Pride since she was a long time hunt chief. During the long hot afternoon she had mentioned the idea of a hunt to most of the other lionesses in the pride.
She wasn't sure who was going to actually join her this evening. Honestly she hoped everyone did show, it would be good for them. A way to bond together as a family. Ever since Scar had died and Simba returned their had been so tension among the lions. She wasn't the only one to notice the weird behavior, but no one else seemed concerned. Sarabi was concerned about the rift between the pride members. The last thing they needed was some sort of civil war.
Heavy foot steps carried her quietly towards Mapema Rock, a gathering place that she had used for many hunts throughout the years. Keeping a low profile the former Queen came upon the rock and quickly jumped onto the still warm surface. There was excitement brewing in her blood, the hunt always brought her a thrill. Silently she sat and waited for the other hunters to arrive so they could begin talking about what would be the target and who was going to do what. ((A hunt thread for anyone who wishes to join may. Consider it to be a group activtiy.))

She had over heard the girls talking, and how neither Tiifu or Zuri wished to go to flat ridge rock. All of the cubs were taught to stay away from the boundaries of the pride lands. The further from home one got the more danger they could possibly be in. Of course it would figure that her granddaughter would be the one to want to explore. Kiara was a lot like her father in that sense, always trying to push boundaries. Sarabi had followed the cub at a distance, letting her think she was getting away with something dangerous. Honestly, she didn't want to spoil the girls fun, she would be protected. The long grass tickled her sides as she walked through it, her senses more on alert.
Sarabi could smell Kiara lurking in the brush so it didn't surprise her when the cub launched herself from the nearby grass and pounced on her tail. A gentle laugh escaped her as she turned her head to glance back at the princess. Watching her tail tuft drop from the girls mouth she flicked it back and forth as though to get the girl to chase it. She knew that in due time Kiara would be great huntress like the rest of the females in the family. "You shouldn't be out here alone honey tree. Your father would be rather upset if he had found you out here." She chided the cub gently, a stern look on her face.
Indeed this place was no place for a cub. Once upon a time this had been a frequent haunt of Scar. He came out here to be alone and away from the pride. Who knew what sort of evil deeds he had done here so long ago? Just thinking about made a slight shiver run down her back, making the brown fur bristle. "However you are in luck my dear, I am the one that found you. We can just tell your dad that I took you out for a hunting lesson." Sarabi smiled down at her lovely granddaughter.
"Do you want me to teach you a lesson?" She asked, hoping that maybe she would accept the lesson. It would be fun to teach someone small again, it had been awhile after all.

It had been hard for her to accept that her son had been raised by someone else. If she was being completely honest with herself she still wasn't completely okay with it. Simba had been her first born and only son, and she had missed everything with him. The grief she had felt when Mufasa had died with only intensified by Simba's disappearance. The entire pride had searched for him for weeks, but found literally nothing. Eventually she had to accept his death and the grief was immense. How could a mother ever accept her child was gone? Let alone have no proof that he was dead? Scar had suggested that maybe the stampede destroyed his body. Sarabit felt her eyes twitch slightly as her son mentioned Timon, the meerkat? and his advice. In a way it bothered her that hadn't thought of approaching her with his problems.
Her red eyes slowly fell back down to the cavern floor before her. A slow sad smile spread over her face. It was difficult to say the least. "Honestly, it's probably a good idea for you to sleep in one of the other smalls caverns.. It would certainly solve your problem." Somehow she managed to keep her voice completely normal, making sure to not show how uneasy she felt now. All she could do was try to get to know him again. Though even that wasn't easy, he always seemed weird around her. Almost like they needed to have a conversation that hadn't yet happened.
"I can imagine.." She retorted after he mentioned wanting to sit on his friend. With a slight sigh the lioness lowered her head onto the cool ground. Yawning heavily she closed her eyes, trying to will her brain to relax. Sleep was always evading her like a shadow.

It would seem that sleep would evade her again this night, but at least this time it was someone she enjoyed being around. She smelled him before she heard his voice, her son. For a moment she kept her eyes closed, just taking in the moment for what it was. There had been a time not so long ago that she grieved for him. She had lost so much during her life time, so many deaths. Now all of that darkness was pushed away, and a bright light had returned to her life. One eye cracked open to look at the young lion, noticing how awe struck he was of this particular place. If she remembered correctly the stampede happened before the cubs got to the appropriate age to begin a new lion guard. The pride had still been under the care of Scar's guard..
"This is the den of the lion guard. A team of lions that protect the pride lands from any dangers that come from within or from outside. Our shaman's have painted each guard here clean back to when the pride lands was founded many generations ago. Your uncle was the leader of the last guard, but he lost the ability to be the leader when he became the King."
Sarabi stated softly before she slowly moved to sit up, her eyes looking back at the large colorful wall before her. This had been a place of peace and harmony, no blood had ever been shed here in this place. The guard was against that, or they should be. Sarabi was honestly surprised her son was here now. He should be resting, for the duty of the King began as soon as the sun crept over the horizon.
Taking in his image she tried to not feel awkward around him, but it wasn't easy for her. She may be his mother but she hadn't raised him. He had been gone for most of his life and now it felt weird to her. She wanted to smother him in affection and love but he was a grown lion. He didn't need that from her anymore, he got his affection from his mate. It was a hard thing to accept at least for her. It was in her nature to want to make him feel better after all that had happened.
"I'm surprised you are awake, are you having a hard time falling asleep?" Sleeping in the main den was quite hard at times. He would have to get used to the noises again like he had as a baby. The sounds of the pride should bring him comfort not anxiety. She remained where she was, waiting to see what he was going to do.

As night fell across the vast terrain that was called the 'Pride Lands', the pride in question had all returned to their sleeping space. A space she had once so keenly defended against hyena, the pride had to have something. Somewhere that was safe from prying eyes and sharp teeth. Sarabi frowned slightly, as she stretched out along the side of the cave wall. She had long since given up the platform to her son and his wife. Turning her head towards the wall she huffed a bit and flopped onto her back for a moment. Sleep was evading her this night, as it did most nights. When the sun fell away and all the duties of daylight were done, her memories would resurface. A life such as hers was filled with tragedy and agony.. of loss and pain. Even though it had been years she still longed for her mate, she wished to hear his voice one more time.
A few more moments passed before she gave up on sleep for right now. Instead, she slowly stood and stretched her sore limbs. She carefully stepped over the sleeping bodies of various pride members, careful to not wake anyone. Stepping out into the cool night air was refreshing, she drew in a very deep breath. Ruby eyes flickered open as her paws walked a very familiar path way. Sarabi wouldn't venture far from Pride Rock during the night, not with the hyena clan not accounted for. The idea of running into Shenzi and her mongrels was enough to make her hackles raise just a tad.
She found herself walking into the den that once belonged to the Lion Guard. This place had once been filled with so much life and happiness, now it was just silent. All the former lion guard members were dead. Scar had seen to that after he had killed Mufasa. Soon the guard was also dead and only Scar was left to protect the pride. Walking deeper into the cave she soon came upon a large wall covered in various paintings. Some where of different lion guards that had existed through the years.
Her eyes eventually fell on the picture of Scar, and a tight frown crossed her face. Looking at it, all she felt was a deep sorrow. Taking a seat she brushed a few vines away from the wall to look at the various pictures. Remembering a time when life had been good, like it was now. Her son had returned from the dead, and was now ruling the kingdom. Sarabi had never imagined she would see her son again..
Now that he was back, there was still a void. He was grown now and was a King. She had missed out on all of the important moments of his life so far. All except for the birth of her darling grand children. Sarabi wasn't sure how she would approach him, or how she could mend that gap. With a heavy sigh she lay herself down here in the quiet. Hoping that maybe just maybe sleep would find her here.
