Umeme's face blanked when he said she was being rude. Slowly, she leaned to the side to look over to the border, at the exact place he'd crossed from. Then she straightened, looked him in the eye, and raised an unimpressed eyebrow. Because how was SHE the rude one when he was trespassing? If anything he was lucky she was the one who'd come across him. Literally any other lioness in her pride would have challenged him.
He asked if this was the Pridelands and Umeme nodded. Not even a half-year ago that would have been a legitimate question, since Scar's reign had drained the life from the land. Even now the territory was still recovering, with herds returning and the circle of life being reestablished.
A meeting with King Simba. So essentially he wanted permission to bum around and enjoy the sights. Well if there was any king in history that would be absolutely okay with that, it'd be Simba. So long at this lion- Kip, he introduced himself as-, didn't overhunt or hurt one of their pride, Simba would be okay with him hanging out.
Umeme trotted up to his side when he started forward again, no longer seeing any need to block his path forward. There was no way to give her name without speaking so she simply intoned, "Umeme. My name is Umeme."

With each lioness that appeared, Umeme gave them either a friendly blink or a dip of the head. Except Zira, who Umeme did both for. The dip of the head was a little deeper than for the other non-royal lionesses too. Regardless of current pride politics, Zira had once been a queen too, and Umeme would treat her as such.
She listened as her elders discussed who to hunt, and the fact that they'd be going after a zebra whose name was known, who they might have had a past conversation with, didn't sit well with her. Why had Taamu named the zebra? Now Umeme wouldn't be able to eat without picturing the zebra's family in mourning.
Oh well. She'd still hunt with her pridesisters and do her part. It just meant she'd have to hunt for herself later.

It had been a fair while since Umeme had actively participated in a hunt with her pride. While she would never claim to be rusty, it was an unfortunate fact of her life that working with others didn't come naturally to her. Oh she loved her pride sisters, every single one of them. Even the more cantankerous ones. But Umeme thrived when she didn't have to worry about where others were positioned or watching for a signal.
But, alas, hunting together was a time honored tradition, especially when it was a youngling's first time accompanying the hunt. Umeme couldn't say she knew Yolandi very well, but she couldn't say she knew most of her pridemates well either. From close by but not quite joined with the other lionesses, she watched her elders greet each other with affectionate nuzzles and Yolandi bow. It wasn't that odd, all things considered. Maybe the thought of treating the former queen with such casualness weirded her out or made her uncomfortable.
Umeme finally approached the quartet and dipped her head to all of them, even Yolandi. Just because she was younger didn't mean she wasn't any more deserving of respect. She joined Yolandi to the side to let the others discuss their targets for the night and glanced over at the younger lioness. She wondered if Yolandi was nervous about her first hunt. Umeme's own had been... not exactly thrilling, considering it had been at the start of Scar's reign. This wasn't something gestures alone could convey, and Umeme spoke. "You'll do fine. Trust yourself and trust us."

... Huh. Well, that was anti-climactic. She'd at least expected him to jump. Most others she snuck up on did. A grin that exposed his teeth and a chipper 'mornin!' were all she got though. Was the grin supposed to be a threat? A wordless 'I have teeth too, don't make me use em'?
... No, Umeme didn't think so. Part of communicating mostly through gestures and body language meant she was usually able to understand when others did the same.
He. He really had just meant 'good morning'. That was just WEIRD. And he hadn't even stopped while he greeted her. Umeme narrowed her eyes at him as he got farther away, not in irritation or anger, but pure bewilderment.
She came back to herself after a few moments before running past him and spinning around, skidding on her paws and blocking his path. She kept herself non-threatening and just blinked up at him, twitching her notched ear and tilting her head.
It was a wordless 'what are you doing'? But honestly, Umeme didn't expect him to understand. She didn't even know his name, he didn't know hers, and he didn't know her. She wouldn't be surprised if he just thought she had an itch in her ear or that she just COULDN'T talk.

Umeme watched, silent as the stars and still as stone, as the unknown lion paced back and forth just outside of the border. While she hadn't been specifically patrolling the border, she had nonetheless come upon this stranger just outside of her pride's lands. It would remiss of her to not at least monitor the situation.
She watched as he seemingly made his decision and crept across the border. Pale blue eyes followed him as he slowly picked his way through, his body language screaming about how uncomfortable he was. A foreign feeling crept up on Umeme: curiosity. Normally by this point she would have fled the scene and beat the lion to Pride Rock to warn King Simba, but the sight of somebody clearly being nervous yet soldiering on anyway peaked her interest.
Wait, was he mumbling to himself? Umeme took the risk of perking her ears to catch what he was saying, but it was under his breath and too far away. That was even weirder. Was he an actual danger and her curiosity was putting her pridemates through unnecessary jeopardy? No, she decided. If it came to that, she'd take him on herself. If nothing else he seemed to be ignoring the nearby herd animals, so he had that going for him.
Finally it was too much for her. Umeme waited until he was a little further away before stalking silently closer and purposefully nudging a pebble, making her presence known. She wanted to see what he'd do.

Neither queen turned her away, and tension that Umeme didn't know she had left her chest in a silent woosh of air. Though Nala narrowed her eyes at her, an expression that had her hesitate to truly sit down. Had she wanted time alone with her mother-in-law? No, that wasn't it. Nala had never had a problem speaking her mind, even as a young cub. So what else...?
Oh. Umeme flattened her ears sheepishly when Nala revealed that she'd been looking to get out of the den the pride all shared. That explained the glare then. Nala didn't like being told what to do and had probably taken her silent question as reprimand for being out. If that was the case, Umeme was lucky she hadn't been whacked in the face.
Nala glanced at her to ask what she was doing out there, and Umeme flicked her tail towards her and lowered her head in an apology. In an actual answer, she joined the two lionesses under the shade but, instead of laying down like them, sat closer to the trunk of the tree with her ears pricked and eyes scanning the area. It was the same thing she'd done by the stones but now she was right next to the queens.

This is a request for somebody to draw Umeme for me. She's the same peach-cream as most of her pride with pale blue eyes and a nick in one of her ears. She doesn't have a secondary color. The tuft of fur at the end of her tail is orange. Please and thank you!

Pale blue eyes followed first one lioness, then another. It wasn't a surprise that neither queen had noticed her at the edges of the watering hole, despite not having much coverage. Umeme had mastered the art of disappearing in plain sight, and that had translated into staying so still she was indistinguishable from the rocks around her.
At first she was content to stay where she was and simply keep watch for trouble. Not that either queen, current or former, couldn't take care of themselves. But one was getting on in years and the other had recently given birth, so if trouble came Umeme wasn't one percent confident they could respond in the appropriate time.
Umeme frowned though when a zebra passed in front of her, breaking her line of sight. At first she ignored it, but it happened again with a wildebeest and again with an antelope. This wouldn't work, not at all. So she sighed heavily and rose from her not-quite-hiding place and padded over toward them, purposefully rustling the grass so as not to startle either lioness.
She stopped a little bit away and bowed toward them in wordless greeting before shooting Nala a raised eyebrow, silently asking what she was doing away from her newborn cub and Priderock. Just because she COULD go anywhere she wanted now didn't mean it was entirely a good idea at the moment.
