She never dreamed she would have lived long enough to see the Pride Lands come back to life. For all intensive purposes she thought the drought was going to kill her, like it had so many others. Now it all seemed to be a distant memory, a bad one at that. Green grass was beginning to sprout from the dirt, leaves blooming on the trees. With a new King on the throne the Circle of Life seemed to return as well. The hyena clan had quietly vacated the territory and the herds were slowly returning. Sarabi was silently grateful that she wouldn't have to feel guilty all the time for hunting the meager herds. As the sun rose over the horizon the lioness had went out on a stroll.
Having freedom was something was getting used to again. Scar had never allowed the lionesses freedom to roam as they wished. Instead he had kept the entire pride together in a small cave. It had been hell. A shudder ran down her spine for a moment, the memories all to fresh for her. Life had been nothing more then hunting and sleeping for so very long. There had been no time for anything else. With no particular direction in mind, Sarabi set off on her morning walk. She wound the paths was ease, her brain remembering it all without having to look.
Soon enough she found herself at the vast watering hole, the morning sunlight evaporating the dew on the grass. Sarabi moved to the edge of water and bent to lap down the coolness. It felt so good on her parched throat. Filling her belly with the refreshing water the lioness walked lazily to a nearby tree to relax. As she rested she watched the watering hole content to see the other animals drinking. Everyone seemed at ease now that life was returning to normal.
Sarabi had wished for this so many times. So many days she had prayed to the spirits and kings for some sort of help. Now it was all a bad dream. She only wished that Mufasa was here to share this with her.

Nala sighed, taking a deep breath of the clean, bright air. Kion was sleeping back at the den in the care of her mother, so Nala had a moment for herself. Taking slow, savory steps, she made her way to the water hole. While Simba was gone, this place had held bittersweet memories; it had been one of the last places she and her mate had played before he disappeared. Pushing aside the negative feelings, trying to remember that Simba was back and with her again, she lumbered to the water and took a soft lap at the lukewarm water. After a moment, relishing in the sounds of the savannah, Nala turned her teal gaze to her surroundings. A few herd animals were nearby, comfortably drinking in the peace of the water hole. A few birds flew overhead, chatting their morning gossip; Nala fought to not eavesdrop. A few mumblings of 'good morning, your majesty' were thrown her way, which she returned with a soft smile and bow of her head.
Eventually her eyes rested on Sarabi, resting under the shade of a nearby tree. Morning sunlight dappled her brown fur, her expression serene. Smiling warmly, Nala slowly made her way over to her mother in law, nuzzling the side of her head with hers when she was close enough. "Good morning, Sarabi," Nala greeted her predecessor, settling down next to the older lioness. Despite the short walk from Pride Rock to the water hole, her body was slightly sore from the exertion. Still tender from Kion's difficult birth, Nala internally chastised herself for not taking Rafiki's advice of rest more seriously. Still, she could sense no major harm done, just soreness.

Pale blue eyes followed first one lioness, then another. It wasn't a surprise that neither queen had noticed her at the edges of the watering hole, despite not having much coverage. Umeme had mastered the art of disappearing in plain sight, and that had translated into staying so still she was indistinguishable from the rocks around her.
At first she was content to stay where she was and simply keep watch for trouble. Not that either queen, current or former, couldn't take care of themselves. But one was getting on in years and the other had recently given birth, so if trouble came Umeme wasn't one percent confident they could respond in the appropriate time.
Umeme frowned though when a zebra passed in front of her, breaking her line of sight. At first she ignored it, but it happened again with a wildebeest and again with an antelope. This wouldn't work, not at all. So she sighed heavily and rose from her not-quite-hiding place and padded over toward them, purposefully rustling the grass so as not to startle either lioness.
She stopped a little bit away and bowed toward them in wordless greeting before shooting Nala a raised eyebrow, silently asking what she was doing away from her newborn cub and Priderock. Just because she COULD go anywhere she wanted now didn't mean it was entirely a good idea at the moment.

If she was being honest with herself she was not surprised by the company. Though she was a bit curious as to why Nala was out and about so soon after giving birth. She frowned slightly a concerned look on her face as she looked the younger lioness over. Sarabi smiled and returned the nuzzles with open affection for the other female. "Good morning honey tree, how are you feeling?" She questioned softly her deep voice rumbling in her chest. Taking a moment to look around she was surprised that her son had not tagged along with his mate. Simba was rather over protective of her and would often be Nala's shadow. Surely that had to annoy her.. She was a strong lioness she didn't need a chaperone.
"Needed a break from the den?" She asked her with a slight laugh, it was annoying being on den rest. When she had Simba. the same thing happened. The birth was hard on her, and she had bled to much. Rafiki had demanded that she remained in the den until fully healed. Much to her horror, her mate had stationed himself at the entrance of the den and would not allow her to leave. It had been the longest time in her life thus far. Finally she was given approval to return to royal duties which she did with gusto. The second time she had given birth had been much easier. Hopefully if Nala were to have more in the future it would be easier on her.
The crunching of grass made her tense for a moment before her eyes fell on the lioness. Umeme. A gentle smile crossed her face as she returned the nod. "Come join us hun, it's going to get hot today no need to stand in the sun." Sarabi invited her warmly before lowering her head to rest on the cool ground. It was nice that life was returning to normal. She just hoped that the peace remained.

Nala tried to ignore the flash of concern from Sarabi before the older lioness smiled and returned her greeting. She knew that everyone's first thought was for her and Kion's health after what they went through, but to be frank, Nala was entirely over the concern. Although, she was relieved when Sarabi asked after her, and not her newborn cub. When Kiara was born, she had been new to it all, and never second-guessed the compliments to her baby or lack of concern over her own well-being. Kiara had been easy, joyful, and new. Kion's birth had left her feeling off, and sore, and alone.
"Oh, well enough." She answered Sarabi's question lightly, not feeling like going into detail this early in the morning. When the elder lioness continued, her words laced with hidden laughter, Nala returned the chuckle with a guilty smirk. "Absolutely! You know how stuffy it can be. And Simba..." she shook her head, still smiling with a hint of a tease; "You know how he is. Constantly on watch with Kiara and me these days."
She paused, turning her aqua eyes towards the sound of another approaching lioness. Umeme bowed when she came closer, then when Sarabi gave permission for her to join them, raised on eyebrow at Nala. It was as if she was asking why she was there, away from her newborn. A flash of anger pushed Nala's eyebrows down slightly, furrowing her brow before she looked back towards Sarabi. Taking a deep breath, she pushed the negative emotion down before returning to her conversation.
"My mom is watching over Kion for me for a bit. I thought some time for myself would be nice, considering how long Rafiki and Simba have kept me cooped up. I feel like it's been years!" Smiling wryly, Nala adjusted her position to be more comfortable in the shade of the tree. A short yawn broke her smile and she sighed, her glance towards Umeme still pained a bit by the unspoken questions in her first gesture. "What are you doing out this morning, Umeme? Are you on patrol, or scouting for the hunt later?"

Neither queen turned her away, and tension that Umeme didn't know she had left her chest in a silent woosh of air. Though Nala narrowed her eyes at her, an expression that had her hesitate to truly sit down. Had she wanted time alone with her mother-in-law? No, that wasn't it. Nala had never had a problem speaking her mind, even as a young cub. So what else...?
Oh. Umeme flattened her ears sheepishly when Nala revealed that she'd been looking to get out of the den the pride all shared. That explained the glare then. Nala didn't like being told what to do and had probably taken her silent question as reprimand for being out. If that was the case, Umeme was lucky she hadn't been whacked in the face.
Nala glanced at her to ask what she was doing out there, and Umeme flicked her tail towards her and lowered her head in an apology. In an actual answer, she joined the two lionesses under the shade but, instead of laying down like them, sat closer to the trunk of the tree with her ears pricked and eyes scanning the area. It was the same thing she'd done by the stones but now she was right next to the queens.

A lazy yawn escaped her as she glanced over at Nala, noting the slight tension between her and the other lioness. Though it was quite obvious it wasn't an actual problem, everyone automatically assumed that Nala was fragile and needed constant pampering. She knew her daughter in law better then that, she had been raised mostly in the Shadow times, and thus she was tough. You had to be tough to survive during such a time, a lot of the pride's cubs had died during Scar's time on the throne. "Simba is still learning how to be a King, much less a husband and father. You have to give him a bit of slack.. he was raised far from here." Sarabi knew that in due time her son would be a wonderful leader for the Pride Lands. He had so much to catch up on, so many lessons he had missed. It was enough to make one's head spin.
When she first heard that her son was raised by a warthog and a meerkat, all she could think of doing was laughing. It was hilarious. Being raised by animals that most would see as food. Now those two were permanent members of the pride, seen as the uncles and grandfathers of the pride's cubs. She listened as the talk of a hunt started, they still had to leave the Pride Lands to hunt. No animals were allowed to be hunted currently, not until the herds had regrown and were once more stable. The thought of hunting peeked her interest and she turned to look at both of the other females. "I'd love to hunt again, it's been so long and I'm getting rusty."
Sarabi had once been happy to never hunt again, but time had passed. Scar was long gone and things were returning to normal. As she thought about the tyrant her mind slowly drifted to Zira and her family. She loved all of Zira's cubs almost like they were her family, and it hurt that they were going through their own tragedy. Zira had become distant since her son's return and it was a rare moment to even catch her to speak. Sarabi knew better then anyone how heart broken she must have been.
She didn't fault Zira for anything, seeing that she had done all she could to help the pride survive. Taking hunt parties out for weeks on end to find a meal for the pride. Nuka had been a dear sweet little boy even if his father disapproved of him. In her eyes hed plenty of potential, and she always tried to get him to see it as well. Sarabi had also been very attached to Zira's youngest son a cub named Kovu. He was a dear little thing. Even though he looked a lot like his father. All she could do was hope. Hope that in time Zira would understand or perhaps her son could make peace or try to.
"Have you talked to Zira lately? I haven't seen her or heard from her much since Simba returned. I know she's still in the territory but she stays far away from Pride Rock now.. The same with her cubs. I hope Nuka is doing alright.." She hoped that Nala knew something. Hopefully anything.. Sarabi's attention fell on the watering hole as a large herd of zebra approached for a drink. Ruby eyes then fell on Umeme hoping that eventually she would join them in the shade. The heat was just to much today.

Nala made a short note that Umeme didn't answer her question with words, just body language. No, it seemed as if the other lioness was just out and about along with the two queens, enjoying the morning before the afternoon sun warmed the rocks too much. Keeping her aqua eyes roving around them, Nala nodded as Sarabi spoke. She knew the elder lioness was right; Simba had changed so much from the daring young cub she had known all those years ago. Sure, he was still the same in some aspects, but Nala was still adjusting to the lion he had become. She knew Sarabi was coping with the same changes she was, and took her advice to heart. "I know..." she sighed, smiling as she stretched further into the dappled sunlight. "He's doing very well, though. I mean... look around us, Sarabi. It's just like I remember. Maybe better." Lazily stretching her rough pink tongue to groom the fur on her forearm, the pale lioness listened once more to Sarabi's honeyed voice. The revelation that Sarabi missed the hunt echoed within her. She, too, missed the rush of the hunt. She had become pregnant just as the Pridelands were returning to their former glory, and just after Kiara was weaned became pregnant again with Kion. It had been so long since she had been out in the grasslands, taking down prey and feeling the rush of the hunt. An adept huntress, Nala felt grim that she had been unable to help her pride sisters, her subjects, for so long. That would need to change, as soon as she was recovered. Breaking the news to Simba that she would have no more cubs would be upsetting - for the both of them, since Nala was sure she would eventually want more, but duty to her pride came first. A comfortable silence fell between the three lionesses, filled with deep breaths and the sounds of the herds around them. Suddenly, Sarabi asked about Zira - and Nala's expression soured once more. She had never really liked the striped lioness; her brash way of speaking to the rest of the pride and the way she treated her children made Nala's stomach turn. While she sympathized with her children, she knew how loyal Nuka was, and the younger cubs were picking up more and more of Zira's habits as they aged. Especially the daughter, Vitani. Named after "war", the child could only grow into the name. And Kovu... named for who Zira claimed was his father. Nala knew better - it had been much too coincidental that Zira had two living, healthy cubs, considering her track record of litters with Scar. Additionally, something about Kovu's eyes, no matter how closely they resembled Scar's in color, gave her the indication that he was someone else's son. "No, and to be honest, I don't care to check after her. Something about her, Sarabi... It doesn't sit well with me. The way she talks about Scar... I worry."Sarabi Umeme
