“Vitani? Are you okay?”
The voice startled Vitani and she spun around to confront whoever had snuck up on her, however she hesitated when she saw exactly who it was. "Bakari, don't sneak up on me like that!" she snapped at the other cub, scowling deeply due to her own embarrassment at being caught off guard as well as her annoyance at him. He had probably seen her playing with the butterfly and heard her scream like a frightened cub- the humiliation was too much.
"I'm fine" grumbling a reply, she shook out her pelt and lowered her gaze to glare at the ground beneath her. Why was it that there was only someone around to talk to when she was doing something she'd rather they didn't see. "What are you doing anyway? Don't you have somewhere else to be?" Bakari was one of the more charismatic cubs in the pride and she found it difficult to believe that none of the other cubs would want to play with him.
Glancing away from the other cub, she stared out in the direction that the butterfly had flown and wondered how it must feel to come and go as they pleased. Freedom, it seemed was only granted to a few creatures of the pridelands, she and the other cubs were expected to remain at priderock and slowly die of boredom while the lionesses were out seeking adventure.

Vitani lay on her back, tail flicking idly as the mid-day sun warmed her pelt. It was so quiet, recently that's all that ever was... Quiet. Ever since Simba had taken over, things had changed and for the cub, she didn't know if that change was for the better. A groan of discontent left Vitani's mouth as she pushed herself up and looked around, nobody was around and everything was so frightfully boring. When her father was alive, he'd kept Kovu all to himself and robbed her of her littermate to play with, but even with her brother's absence there always seemed to be someone around to talk to or play with. Now, everyone seemed to have disappeared... Drawn from pride rock by the new vibrance of the land. Even with their father no longer around, Kovu wasn't there to keep her company... What was she to do to pass the time.
Suddenly movement caught the pre-teenager's eye and she immediately leapt to her paws, uttering the most ferocious growl that she could manage, she stalked towards her prey. The butterfly flew lazily around, always hovering just out of her reach, never once allowing itself to get within paws reach- it was as if it were taunting her. Vitani gave chase to the colourful insect that dare encroach upon her territory, pouncing and chasing as if she herself were driving it from their lands.
Then without warning her front paw slipped from the edge of the rock and stepped into nothingness, she gave a shrill cry of surprise as she managed to catch herself- halting her descent over the edge and retreated a couple of pawsteps back- out of harms way. During her chase, she hadn't realised that the butterfly had led her to the edge of the rock, another step forward and she would have been reunited with her father. Heart hammering in her chest from the near fatal error, Vitani glared after the butterfly who had continued its lazy path across the sky, retreating further and further away.
"Yeah, and don't come back!" she growled after it, embarrassed by her mistake and hoping that nobody had heard her squeal like a cub. If her mother had been around, then maybe she wouldn't have had to resort to cub-like games of chase in order to entertain herself... But no, everyone seemed so wrapped up in their own affairs to really pay her much attention. Now that her father was gone, she was just another cub... There was nothing special about her, no one had to go out of their way to make her feel important- they gave all of their attention to Simba and Nala's cubs, they were the future of the pride now.
