Kiara had never been to this place and she had no idea how. It was right at the base of where she lived. Maybe she should start exploring a little closer to home than going further afield if there was a place like this tucked away. The vines brushed her fur as she nudged her way through, leaving no doubt a couple of loose leaves on her back and head but she didn't think much of it. Looking around, the cub let out a surprised gasp. This place was huge, nowhere near as big as the cave where the pride slept, but big enough that a few lions could comfortable sleep in here. Kiara took a couple more steps further into the cave and she let her gaze wander over the walls, they were covered in large brightly coloured paintings that looked like the sort of thing Rafiki did. Kiara sent another sweeping gaze around the cave to double check that it was empty and that she was alone before settling into a sitting position and staring up at the paintings. One that caught her interest most of all was a doodle of who she guessed was Scar. She'd heard descriptions of him and it sure looked like that; brown fur, black mane and green eyes. The eyes looked quite scary even in the drawing and she cocked her head to the side with a curious hum.Getting to her paws Kiara strolled the length of the wall, craning her neck as much as she could to see some of the higher paintings but when her neck started to hurt after a little while, the cub stretched herself out, flexed her claws and opened her jaws in a small yawn. Outside the sky was turning a shade of pink as the moon started to creep up into the sky, she'd go back up to the cave soon but she was too busy caught up in the pictures and letting her imagination run wild. Near to the drawing of Scar was another drawing of a lion stood on Pride Rock and Scar hanging off the edge. Kiara furrowed her brow and frowned, pushing herself onto her hind paws and letting her forepaws rest on the wall as she examined the drawing closely. "Daddy?" She murmured quietly to herself.@nala

Darkness was settling in over the Pridelands, the sunset a glorious backdrop to the silhouette of Pride Rock. Coming back from her nightly walk with her family, Nala watched with careful eyes as Kiara slipped ahead of them, sneaking into some offshoot crack of their cavernous home. Glancing at Simba, she noted that he was much too busy speaking to Zazu, who had come with an evening report. Sighing, but knowing the life of a royal was never dull, Nala motioned to Simba that she would continue on ahead, and followed her daughter. Kion was sleeping in her jaws, his weight growing heavier by the day. Soon, he would be too large to carry like this for their walks.
As she got closer to the hidden hole Kiara had entered, Nala realized what the room was. The lair- not many lions had dared to enter the room since Scar wiped out the last guard. Some had even told stories that the lair was haunted - that the Mjuzi's paintings moved, and secret passageways and traps could send unwelcome visitors to a tragic fate.
A whisper of a movement caught her attention and Nala entered the lair, being careful to not tickle Kion's nose with the vines covering the entryway. Nala had never been inside the lair... her mother had forbade it, after what had happened to the last guard. Scar's secrets had all come out at his death; how he had been conspiring to kill Mufasa for years, and when his guard refused to help, he had used the Roar of the Elders against them... stripping him of his power.
Nala continued into the lair, looking around the dim, dusty room for sign of her daughter. Spotting Kiara stretched out against a wall with faded paintings, Nala padded over to her, setting Kion down carefully between her paws when she sat a few paces away. Kiara had her eyes trained on the wall, studying a painting of Mufasa atop Pride Rock, with Scar's likeness below, surrounded by evil red eyes. To the right was another depiction of Scar, this time with his guard. Nala let her own eyes roam across the wall, taking in the different paintings with awe. Rafiki was truly a talented Mjuzi, to have painting this story.. and in such secrecy. Nala absentmindedly wondered if Simba knew about the paintings in the lair.
Kiara whispered, so low Nala almost didn't hear her. Questioning the identity of the golden lion atop Pride Rock. Nala smiled, chuckling softly. "It does look like your daddy, doesn't it, Kiara?" she nodded, hoping she wouldn't startle her daughter too much by intruding. "But that's your daddy's father - Mufasa."

Kiara understood her parents had busy lives. She was often reminded of it whenever she was getting on the nerves of some of the older lions Have fun whilst you can Princess, when you’re older fun will be hard to come by. It annoyed her that she was constantly reminded. She knew she was a princess. But she would still have fun, being Queen wouldn’t stop that. She’d not be like her dad, always busy, always talking and planning. She’d have moments like this where they were spending time as a family and having fun. Her dad was always so cheerful when they had their walks, it made Kiara happy although it was kind of gross to see her parents nuzzling sometimes. She never wanted to be married. It was all kinds of icky.
As they’d approached Pride Rock Zazu had been quick to join them and Kiara had started to pout, up until then she’d been able to play with her dad and get his attention, now he was all work. Couldn’t Zazu have waited? All his talk was dull tonight. Kiara had eavesdropped for a small while but when there was nothing exciting she’d started doing what she could to keep herself busy. Kion had fallen asleep so her mum had her mouth full and even though the Princess had tried to get some hunting practice it, it wasn’t as easy as when she was hunting with say, her grandma Sarabi.
The lair Kiara ventured into wasn’t one the cub recognised, but that made her all the more keen to explore and the drawings on the wall. She could make stories up! Tales of heroes and Kings, Princesses like her, villains like Scar. Sure, she could see that Scar was in the drawings but she could use him for her little adventures in her mind or make up lions that look and acted like him. Maybe she could even ask Rafiki to tell her a story or two when he wasn’t busy. After all, it looked like his handiwork.
Kiara hadn’t heard her mum follow her and the cub jumped, letting out a surprised yelp. She thought she’d still been with her dad and Zazu. Kiara dropped onto her hind paws and looked quickly at Kion to see if she’d woken her sleeping brother, but luckily he was still fast asleep. Kiara waited as her mum went onto explain who it was in the drawing and she turned back to it, cocking her head to one side. ”Mufasa...” She repeated softly. She’d heard plenty of stories about her late granddad, Mufasa and Scar seemed to always be in the stories spread around the Pridelands. It was interesting and more often than not she wished she could have met her granddad, she wondered what he would be like. Her grandma was so kind and loving, surely her granddad would have been the same? Alas, it wasn’t meant to be for the cub. ”He looks just like daddy in that drawing.” She said, cocking her head to the other side.

Nala quickly checked on Kion when Kiara yelped, but thankfully the infant was soundly sleeping, his breathing deep and relaxed. Smiling at Kiara, she took a few steps forward to join her at the base of the painting covered wall, her aqua eyes taking in the details. There were so many paintings, most faded, but some still retaining their bright colors. Nala could see the events of her childhood played out in still frames on the rock's cool surface; Rafiki had been busy, hadn't he? She noted that there were no recent paintings; she wondered if that was due to Rafiki's old age or the trauma of Scar's reign leaving this area scarred. She would need to ask him, if she got a chance. After all, with Kion being the second born, he would inherit this place soon enough. It had been a long time since there had been a lion guard in the Pridelands. Kiara quietly repeated the name of her grandfather and Nala sighed, remembering the late king with fond memories. When she pointed out the resemblance again Nala chuckled, looking at the particular painting Kiara was fixated on. "Yes, he does, doesn't he?" She took a moment, thinking, memories flooding her mind and heart. "You know... your daddy was a lot like you, when he was little." She looked down at her daughter, playfully pushing her shoulder with a large, cream colored paw. "He liked to sneak off and find adventure, too." Smiling warmly at her eldest cub, Nala took another beat's pause before turning back to to the paintings on the wall, pointing at one of some hyenas running across the rock's surface. "If I had to guess, that painting is about your daddy and I." Hoping it was enough of a mystery to hook her daughter in, she trailed off. She hoped to tell the story most recent in her memory; the last time she and Simba had run away together in search of adventure... when they had snuck away from Zazu and set off to explore the elephant graveyard, only to be chased and cornered by hyenas. Without Mufasa coming to their aid, Nala was sure they would have never made it home. Kiara
