Even in the early morning, the jungle was balmy. The air seemed less damp and cool. The refreshing dew dappled the lush undergrowth everywhere. The sun was slowly beginning to peek over the horizon. Dark red rays caught tiny water particles in the air, making subtle shafts of light cut through the understory.
There was something of a shelter built, made of some sticks and a few large leaves laid on top. Mif liked to have the comforts of a den wherever he went, and spending his late teenagehood near the chimps, he picked up on how to build simple things. Hyena’s natural habitat wasn’t the jungle, but the mortician was a wanderer by nature and liked to see new places. Besides, sometimes he found himself useful by happenstance. Mif was taking a bit of a rest before he planned to partake in what he anticipated to be a tiresome endeavor.
But not now. The lazy hyena was asleep. Or at least, he was.
Waaaa, aa-waaaaa!
Yellow eye opened a sliver. The light brought a bird calling, like a rooster crowing in the morning. It went on for a while as Mif tried to ignore it. Finding he wasn’t able to get back to sleep, he lifted his head and let out an uncharacteristic growl. It was quiet. He flopped his head down on his black paws. The corners of his mouth turned up. And then:
Waaa, aa-waaaaa!
Both eyes opened. He tried to be a chill guy, but this was a headache: literally. Nose wrinkled slightly and he bounced a bit on the ground as he let out a deep breath, emitting a louder, even more threatening growl. It was quiet. Mif kept his head up a while, eyes squinted in a daze and ears twitching with annoyance. Just when he thought he was safe, he settled back down. And then:
WAAA, AA-WAAAAAA!!
The leaves rustled and the blue hyena exited the den, vanishing into the undergrowth.
Waaa, aa-wa--
Suddenly silence.
It was peaceful for a while longer as the den was unattended. After a few minutes, the undergrowth stirred again and the small hyena returned. His front was peppered with feathers and he let out a belch. After sniffing and rubbing the back of his paw against his mouth, he began to plod back toward his shelter.
Mif stopped. There was something different. His nostrils puffed. He could smell someone else was around. Drawn somewhat from his sleepiness, his eyes opened completely and his ears perked. Tail standing up, he craned his neck a bit and continued to sniff the air, cautiously moving forward.
