There was nothing in this world more beautiful than sunrise at Pride Rock. The large stone structure was the tallest thing for miles, towering over trees and animals alike, it was huge and impossible not to notice. The sun always seemed to agree. When it rose, it shined its warm and comforting light right through the main opening and into the large interior space where the Pridelander pride lay sleeping. Well... usually anyway. In the brilliant light of the coming day, a lone figure sat on the edge of the rock, her back to the rest of the sleeping pride, casually listening to some of them snore while others shifted and twitched in their sleep. The lioness peered over her shoulder at them, still able to make out most of the lionesses even though the den was dark. But as that brilliant ball of fire rose into the sky, the other lions came alive with colors and markings suddenly on full display. But none of them seemed to awaken.
Nya silently appreciated that.
As she turned to look back over the horizon, a gentle wind toyed with hair hair and fur, almost like soft hands cradling her face, fingers in her thick facial rough, moving up her cheekbones to gently play with her ears, and she closed her blue eyes in bliss. The air was a little cold this morning, it being the height of the wet season, the temperatures were more mild this time of year, to the point that many lions complained, claiming it to be "too cold". But the thick coated Nya only laughed at their complaints. They had no idea what true 'cold' was, she had crossed mountains and waded through snow to get to where she was in life, a gentle chill little breeze did nothing but comfort her, reminded her of 'home'. Or at least, the pride that she thought was her 'home'. A fond memory of her father, talking to her calmly as a gentle breeze flowed between them like water in a river, was replaced by memory of her mother coldly giving her away to the first male suitor who came into the territory. Her bliss turned to disgust and her expression turned twisted and sharp, eyes glaring at the horizon where a mountain range could barely be seen through the distant haze.
But she said and did nothing, letting her hatred for her mother boil for a minute before inaction turned the heat down and the complex stew that was her life settled down again, and the lioness' disturbed appearance softened again to a quiet, thoughtful stoicism. Though she still looked a little angry and distressed, most lions familiar with her knew that she just always looked like that, as though she had smelled something really terrible. A resting bitch face, if you will. But, though she maintained a stone-level of apathy in her face, in her heart and her mind, she was panicking.
She had to talk to Amari, she had to. It had kept her from sleeping all night long, all she did was watch that beautiful white lioness breathe gently into her fur, curled up next to Nya with no fear and no regret, just.... love? The word made the lioness' face skew again. Love was for children, in her experience there was none, you just pop out some kids whenever it's convenient with, often times sired by a male you didn't even know. Love was just... not in the cards for her, she was too damaged, too broken. Amari really could do so much better. But until that day came, Nya was infatuated and it needed to be said, it needed to be shared. Because some lionesses in the pride were talking about leaving, about abandoning the Pridelands and seeking a new unbiased life without the rules and traditions, without the stress of needing to hunt for and feed everyone, without worry or regret, just life. And Nya was immediately nervous about such things. At the moment, it seemed to be all talk but it set loose some butterflies in the lioness, about where Amari stood on the matter. Nya would follow her anywhere, of course, if the silver lioness came to her right now and said 'let's go', Nya would jump up like an excited dog and would of course follow her friend, her god damned crush- god dammit she was in love wasn't she- straight into the pits of hell if that was where she was going.
Still, Nya was a bit nervous about asking. She had no idea how she was going to word things, did not know how to have this complex conversation. She was a doer, not a talker so, she was out of her element and it kept her awake all night long, just cycling through all of the ways that this could go wrong. But, as the sun rose, the time had come and as the pride slowly awoke, Nya waited patiently for everyone to yawn and stretch and there was some talk of breakfast before finally, that lightning bolt of beautiful silver hair appeared from the shadows. Standing, Nya turned to intercept her.
"Amari... Can I... talk to you for a minute?"

There was a soft grunt in the darkness, a soft exhale of breath. She wiggled closer to the source of the sound and nestled her head against her mother's back before resting there. Amari may have issue with her mother but she loved the lioness all the same. How could one not love the one that gave them life? Sarafina's breath grew deeper again beneath her cheek and the younger feline felt a slight smile cross her face. Though it would seem this peaceful moment was about to end as the sun decided to rise and usher in the day. The serenity of sleep was slowly washed away as the lions around her began to rise to greet the new day. Already they spoke of what to do for that day, who needed to do what. For a moment the young lioness just wanted to keep laying here with her mother and sister. It to her felt like what heaven would be. So many mornings she had awoke like this while she grew, to a soft nudge or gentle lick from her mother. Or at times her father or even Zira depending on where she had spent the night.
"Rise and shine girls.." Sarafina's soft tones tickled her ears and she wanted to complain at her. Amari instead creaked one green open to look at her mom, seeing the loving and yet stern look on that face. "Okay.. okay" She grunted softly and raised her head off of her mother's back, which allowed the older lioness to stand and stretch out those pesky muscles. For a moment longer she lay on the cool stone floor, staring at her mother watching how she moved and how she got ready for the day. Taking it all in. Her ears twitched soundlessly as the talk of breakfast and duties started up. Of course her mother volunteered to go on the hunt that morning, which she usually did now that the girls were older.
Though sometimes she still wished her mom would stay home and just spend the day with her like she used to. Amari ignore the awkward lump in her throat as she slowly stood upright. Immediately she stretched out her legs and back feeling the muscles pop and grind. It felt nice. It felt good to be alive. She turned her attention to Iniko who was already going off to begin her own duties for the day. Her sister had a fondness for medicine and herb collection, and often spoke of one day being a healer. Which honestly had lead to Amari having her own personal crisis. She still hadn't found her place within the pride.
Once upon a time she had dreamed of being a ruler, a princess, someone the others would respect. However now that life took a different turn it left her picking up the pieces. There was talk floating through the pride about leaving, starting life again elsewhere. It was a idea she had been toying with for some time. What the world would be like outside of the Pride Lands, where no one knew who she was. Where she could make her own destiny without any outside influence.
One more stretch and yawn and the silver toned lioness followed after her quickly departing family. The sun was bright and for a moment it made her flinch as she walked out into what felt like cold fire. The mixture of sunlight and cold stone was enough to make a shiver run through her body. As she turned to walk down the steps she heard someone call out her name. Amari stopped and looked in the direction of the voice, a genuinely happy smile crossing her face at her friend.
"Good morning Nya!!" Amari almost chirped as she approached the much bigger lioness with a bounce in her steps. With a soft huff she bumped her head against her shoulder before rubbing her side against hers. Mingling their scents together into a smell that was clearly there own, it was a scent that often gave Amari some weird comfort. "Sure we can talk, what's up?" She asked her honestly curious. Whatever it was she hoped it was good news.
As the stragglers left pride rock the two lionesses were left alone. If only for a moment.

Hearing her name in that voice, that beautiful sing-song way in which she said it, something that was completely unique to Amari, it was happy, enthusiastic, and comforting, it always gave Nya butterflies and, in the strong light of the sun, the rosy blush that spread across her nose was probably very visible. But she pushed on, enjoying a moment of contact with this national treasure of hers. The silver lioness was soft against her rough coat, Nya's coat was thick and plush but the outside layer of it seemed scratchy, a bit prickly. To be fair, she was probably overdue for a bath but even at her best, her coat was a rough textured expanse, whereas Amari's fur was like velvet and her touch, her body heat, Nya chuffed unconsciously, almost purring as she rubbed her cheeks along the light lioness' back. For all that she knew, this could be the last time that she would see Amari. If the silver lioness rejected this momentous occasion in their relationship... Nya didn't know what she would do, but she probably would not be able to stay in the Pridelands after that, to save herself the pain she'd have to survive, the memories she'd have to unmake, it'd be impossible to stick around. So she lingered in Amari's space for another long drawn out moment, simply burying her nose in that velvet and silk, before finally dragging herself away. By this time most of the pride had dispersed so Nya stepped away, taking a moment to calm herself with a sigh-sounding breath.
"I'm not sure where to start..." The big lioness said, her back to Scar's daughter, her eyes on the horizon but she was not really looking at it as much as that was where her eyes came to rest. Her mind was a whirlwind of words and thoughts, of feelings and insecurity, what was right and what was wrong, what she had to say to get Amari to stay, or at least to let Nya go with her, wherever that destination happened to be. But after a moment, she decided to take a leap and just... do the best she could. So slowly, she turned to face the other lioness, her expression soft but troubled. "Have you ever... really liked something? To the point that you want to be around that thing all of the time?"
She paused, something in her mind telling her that she was already doing this wrong so she needed a moment to ask herself what the hell she was doing. But again, that color across her nose told her to keep going, to not let this slip between her paws, this was important and she needed to keep going. She shuffled her feet a little bit, claws gently clicking against the surface of Pride Rock.
"You know, like... a favorite food. Like... um... dew." Blinking, she looked up, seemingly aware of how silly that sounded. But still she repeated herself. "I uh... I love.. dew."

A few moments after rubbing against her friend, she seemed to bounce over to the edge of the pride rock. With a soft grunt the silver toned lioness sat down and just took a long look at the land she called home. It had been quite some time since she had been able to sit here and just admire the land around her. The very same land that her family had lived in for countless generations for time untold. At one time not so long ago she had been showed this land with her father. He had told her many different stories that day, about the circle of life.. How the world worked before this particular land became more "civilized", the law of tooth and claw. He talked to her about the lion guard and how he had ruined it for himself due to greed. Greed was something that had haunted her father and in a way it still haunted the pride as a whole. She had listened to his advice carefully that morning so long ago, trying to remember every word he spoke.
He had spoke of life and love, the duty of royal blood. How one had to make decisions that didn't always make them happy. It was for the good of the whole. It had a lesson she took to heart but what did it truly matter anymore? Her father was gone, her sister was now the reigning Queen of this land. Her niece was the future Queen and her nephew was a Prince. There was literally no room for her to have these fantasies anymore, it was pointless. Amari didn't have the drive to do what others had done in the past. She had no desire to kill her sister and take her throne, or to destroy those little cubs that were the future of this pride. Just like she had been at one time.
Instead the world had opened up seemingly over night, now she had no duty to anyone except for herself. She could do as she pleased, and every door opened for her. Amari also knew that with her lack of title that meant she could be with anyone she desired. It was a new freedom that she had never pondered before. Glancing over her shoulder she watched Nya for awhile noticing how strange the larger lioness was acting and her words were strange as well.
A confused look settled across her features, those green eyes twinkling with mirth. "You love dew? Whatever are you going on about?" She giggled softly and jerked her head in a come here motion. Amari wanted her friend to see the world from where she did if only for a moment. Honestly she felt this weird energy, it made her feel almost hyper but on the inside. She was aware of how hard her heart hammered in her chest as she watched the lioness.
"This could have been mine you know? At one point I was set to be the next Queen of this land. It is in my blood... but fate had a much different plan for me. Now I am no one, I have no title.. no purpose.." Amari stated softly a slight shiver running down her spine as the wind seemed to dance around them. "I have no duty to this land anymore, I can do whatever I wish.. be with whoever I wish..." The words caught in her throat for a moment as she looked at her friend. Making sure that she was looking in her eyes.
"So explain to me again what you were trying to tell me.."

An almost pained look crossed the larger lioness' scruffy face as she grimaced at her own behavior. She had survived so much in her life, from kings and princes down to the lowliest hyena, she traveled from far away mountains, over cliffs and rocky terrain, ridges that stood hundreds of feet tall, the vertigo of seeing the ground so far away that it blurred into one color. She had hunted goats in that land, had waded and swam in croc-infested waters, had trudged through snow so thick that it was up to her chest, her pawpads were hard and callous from a life of risk with no reward. Why on earth was she suddenly clamming up over something so harmless? Fighting a leopard over half a carcass, starving and lonely, sure that was way more intense a moment in her life than this, than talking to a friend... right?
But still Nya hesitated, sitting down to scratch one of her ears with the exposed claws on one of her hindpaws. Her posture was stiff and it was uncomfortable, so as she eased back into sitting up straight, she paused to roll her shoulders. Then, she tried again...
"I just..." And just like that she had no words. She really had never been good with them in really any situation, let alone one this important. She really had to take a moment here, her mind screaming at her to just take the L and try again later, while her heart was ready to tear itself from her chest, begging her to close the distance between her and her object of absolute infatuation. She let Amari talk for a moment, looking out over Pride Rock, trying to pay attention, but she kept looking back at her, at the way the sun danced in her eyes, like she was full of crystal. The blush across Nya's nose deepened.
Still she fumbled for words, finally allowing the silver lioness to catch her friend's uncertain stare. It was like looking into the night sky the way that the early sun brought out every little glimmer she had in those green orbs. And something about it, something in there, combined with a swift gust of wind that seemed to run fingers through that glorious silver coat, Nya was able to swallow the lump in her throat. This was it. Subtlety was not her strong point so why hide behind it? She'd done worse in her time, had seen worse, had been through worse. She didn't know what it was about Amari that she wanted so badly but they'd do a better job of figuring it out together. So taking a long breath through her nose, Nya met that curious gaze head on, her muzzle bridge a visible pink but for a precious second, she was able to ignore it.
"Be with anyone you want huh?" She started, almost against her will, but she did not look away, she held on to this momentary confidence that was keeping her from absolutely crumbling. "How about me?"
There, she said it, it was out there. But just to be sure, as her confidence sort of deflated and she went back to staring at her paws, she was able to mutter one simple solid truth.
"I love you... and not how I love zebra or how I love swimming, it's more like... the way that I love the sunrise, the way that I am happy to see another day has started... that I can then spend it with you. I love you like the stars love the dark, the way that wolves love the moon, you're very special to me Amari, and you don't have to love me back I just... wanted you to know..."

It had never crossed her mind that this particular situation would be her future. She never imagined that she would able to actually pick her path in life. From the time she had come screaming from her mother's womb she was groomed to be a royal lion. That she could someday become a Queen of this paradise, and she had taken those lessons to her heart. She had loved every moment of it, but she had her reservations on the title of being a princess. A few times during the end of her father's reign he had mentioned her becoming betrothed to another lion from a different pride. That she would have to have a suitable male counter part to rule the pride lands with. Amari had never liked the idea of finding a supposed prince charming, and having to be with him. She wanted to find her partner all on her own and actually fall in love with them..
Which at the time had made her father angry and rather upset with her. He had explained in not so subtle detail that no royal ever marries for love. That it was all a fantasy to look good to the kingdom. If she was being honest with herself it had broken her heart to hear those words. A part of her had always hoped that her parents had at least cared for one another. Learning that it was only to satiate the desire of a King wanting heirs. For a long time afterwards she had sort of fell into herself, finding life to be utterly meaningless. Her mother confirmed the story at a later date and Amari remembered how hard she had cried. There was little comfort to be had in those times, the pride was trying so hard to survive.
Then her older sister came home seemingly back from the dead, with a suitor. A suitor that quickly became the resident King. Nala had somehow managed to find her mate out in the middle of no where. At first it had been hard for her to accept that they loved one another, but in time she saw it. How they would look at each other, how they would laugh together. When the duties were done they would disappear to be alone together.. so in a way she learned romance existed when her bitch sister showed her.
Now that she had lost her title and all rights to this place, she could experience these things for herself. She had no duty to anyone. Only to the dead and that didn't matter.. it was all just dust in the wind. Her green eyes twinkled as she listened to Nya talk and the words were like a cool blast of fresh air. Amari had never given her sexuality much thought, she had always assumed that the right partner would eventually come along.
Her body tingled, her head bowed slightly for a moment to stare at the rock beneath her feet. It was decision time for sure. --- Honestly, her life had improved so much since Nya had joined the pride. She had found her best friend and someone she could talk to about anything that was on her mind. There wasn't a day that had gone by that they weren't together. It was clearly becoming more obvious to her that they had something going on.
Laughing softly, she shook her head. "I think I love you too Nya. Everyday I wake up and hope to be able to spend time with you. I enjoy every dumb thing we do together. You give me so much to look forward and have helped me conquer many of my demons. You are my motivation. I adore everything about you truly." Amari whispered quietly her ears twitching as a sheepish smile crossed her face. Without giving it a second thought she learned in and nuzzled the larger lioness. She buried her head into her shoulder for a moment drawing in a deep breath.
"So now what?"

The larger lioness' eyes went wide for a moment and her jaw, already sort of slack just because Nya had a bad habit of mouth breathing, seemed to drop to the ground almost in disbelief. She had honestly expected Amari to laugh at her, to make fun of her feelings, since the big tough lioness almost never showed any kind of emotion, other than anger really, she was very stoic and closed off. She believed softer emotions, like love, were a weakness to be exploited, that the minute that she took a mate, someone would come along with the goal of revenge or something and her mate would be their immediate target. For her, love was a massive hole in her heavy emotional armor, someplace someone could stick their fingers into and tear her whole armor system to shreds. It was dangerous to be in love, in her mind and for a long time she thought she'd die before taking a mate. But Amari had flipped everything on its side, so kind and soft-spoken, so intelligent with an incredible wit and a mind fit for tact and planning. She was as sharp as steel, as beautiful as it as well, there was no way that Nya was on her radar. But then she said it and Nya had to swallow hard to get her heart out of her throat.
"Y-you... You do? Me?" She asked kind of vaguely. Amari loved her back... she loved her back, her feelings were reciprocated. Nya did not see this coming at all. Amari was a gorgeous and smart and just wonderful lioness, there was not a chance in hell that she could not find a suitor, a big strong male with lots of mane and more brawn than brain. She was settling for less with Nya, or at least that was what her insecurity was saying. But Amari put a period on the end of her sentence by going in for a nuzzle. At first, Nya was a little stiff, sitting but stock still as the silver lioness pressed against her chin. But those damn feelings came back, almost swirling around her like a wind as she felt Amari's velvety fur, her soft touches were gentle and kind, Nya could not help but relax into her, allowing herself to breathe as she and Amari took a long moment to love on each other, Nya resting her cheek on the other female's forehead, chuffing pleasantly. "I didn't think... you don't mind that I am female? You could easily go after someone better. You're gorgeous and well spoken, you could have any lion you wanted to, I bet males would form a line outside your den just to meet you."
There was a thoughtful pause, Nya's head still tilted, resting comfortably on Amari's forehead, she did not pull away and the contact made her insides all tingly. She and Amari had nuzzled each other before, they were good friends and Nya had been injured pretty badly when the silver lioness found and took care of her. There was some nuzzling and some cuddling and other things even very early on. But this was different, the same but very different at the same time. Nya did not believe in love at first sight but, as she took a moment to reflect, to think about what this meant and how it had transpired, they really loved each other from day one. Admitting it was hard but it didn't change the fact that they were good friends and would always be good friends and nuzzling her now was different only because it felt right. It was like cool water in a dry season afternoon, refreshing and genuine now that Nya admitted that she only nuzzled her friend so much because she was more than a friend from the get go.
The big lioness chuckled at the thought, at the memory of all of the times that Amari was more than just her friend and, looking back at it, it seemed obvious. Nya had fallen from more than just a steep ridge. She could've had this talk with Amari months ago. Finally pulling away a bit, leaving their shoulders touching and resting her paw on one of Amari's, Nya leveled the silver lioness with a curious gaze.
"What now?" She repeated, eyes then drifting to the rising sun. "Oh I dunno. I don't know enough about this place to know if we should stay. I know the other lionesses give you crap because of your dad but I'm here for you. Someone says some shit to you, to my girl? Oh, there will be carnage, I promise you that."
She paused, now studying the horizon, looking back and forth across it, thinking. She hadn't been wandering the land for long and she was unsure of any really open territory or any accepting prides in the area. But she did not think the nomadic life would suit the two of them, god forbid some horny males roll up on the two of them. They were scrappy but young, an adult lion, especially one with friends, would probably be able to overpower them and while Nya was pretty secure about this, believing that she is infertile, Amari might not be and such an event could destroy her self-esteem among other things. No, whatever they chose to do, safety was top priority. Those deep blue eyes wandered back to the female nuzzling her neck.
"We really do not want to return to my home pride, I can tell you that much. My oldest brother has a small pride nearby, but it's less of a pride and more of a sausage party. I don't think there is a single female in their ranks.... I heard some of the girls talking the other day about one of the lionesses here, Zira, talking about how they are going to leave this place and start anew. We could go with them."

(Since currently the site is pretty much on hiatus I am going to add in other characters during my posts so that way the story can continue on without much issue. When we reopen of course I won't be doing that anymore..)
Amari had been pondering this exact thing for awhile now, if she was going to leave with Zira or stay here with her birth mother. Everyone in the pride knew how often she butted heads with her biological mother. Many arguments had ended with her wishing that Zira had been her real mom. She knew it had hurt her mother deeply when she had yelled those things at her. It was true however, she wished Zira had been her biological mother. While growing up she had taken quite a liking to the lioness and those feelings were returned in time. At first their relationship had been rather strained and filled with jealousy. The older lioness wanted her cubs to be the heirs to Scar's lineage, not someone else.
However she had won her heart over in due time. Amari loved how strong Zira was and admired her strength. Zira had been the reason Amari had stared to learn how to hunt and how to fight. She wanted to prove herself to the matriarch of their pride. She still did if she was being honest with herself. She wanted to show her how strong she was becoming, how she was more then just a princess.
Glancing up into Nya's blue eyes she smiled slightly. "I definitely like the idea of leaving if Zira decides to go.. She's the closest thing I have left of a actual maternal figure. I love my birth mother but I feel like her being around me and Iniko reminds her of a bad time in her life." Amari told her simply with a slight roll of her shoulders, she had come to terms with her relationship with Sarafina. She worried more about Iniko more then herself, for the other sister was more involved with the pride. Iniko had started training to be a shaman, and she had made a few friends..
"I haven't spoke to Zira or anyone about what was going on. All I know is that there have been a few near attacks the last few days. Everyone is always fighting with each other and no one is making it stop." It was all coming to a head, everyone knew that. Amari would eventually have to pick a side in the matter. Considering her eldest sister was the reigning Queen of the Pride and land. Either way she was going to have to hurt someone's feelings and honestly in her mind it would be easy to hurt her bio mom.
"I guess Zira is having some sort of meeting in the Outlands tonight, perhaps we should go and see what that's all about?" Those loyal to Zira and Scar never had any sort of privacy and so they had to go and have this meeting. Surely the rest of the pride would realize that half their number was gone. She wasn't sure it was the smartest idea but how else could they make some sort of decision.
Amari nudged Nya gently rubbing the top of the her head on the larger lionesses chin. "I've never given much thought... on males in general. I just accepted it as something I would have to do eventually when I wanted cubs.. Even now I don't know if I want cubs." Amari told her in a way to soothe her. She wasn't going to leave over something dumb. Most males were arrogant pigs anyway at least from what she had seen in her life time. All they wanted to do was sleep and mate with whoever they wished. It was rather disturbing.
"Anyway. What do you want to do until then? We have the entire day to ourselves until that meeting happens." Amari was honestly going to let Nya lead the charge on this, let her lead the day. See what kind of trouble they could get into.
