The larger lioness' eyes went wide for a moment and her jaw, already sort of slack just because Nya had a bad habit of mouth breathing, seemed to drop to the ground almost in disbelief. She had honestly expected Amari to laugh at her, to make fun of her feelings, since the big tough lioness almost never showed any kind of emotion, other than anger really, she was very stoic and closed off. She believed softer emotions, like love, were a weakness to be exploited, that the minute that she took a mate, someone would come along with the goal of revenge or something and her mate would be their immediate target. For her, love was a massive hole in her heavy emotional armor, someplace someone could stick their fingers into and tear her whole armor system to shreds. It was dangerous to be in love, in her mind and for a long time she thought she'd die before taking a mate. But Amari had flipped everything on its side, so kind and soft-spoken, so intelligent with an incredible wit and a mind fit for tact and planning. She was as sharp as steel, as beautiful as it as well, there was no way that Nya was on her radar. But then she said it and Nya had to swallow hard to get her heart out of her throat.
"Y-you... You do? Me?" She asked kind of vaguely. Amari loved her back... she loved her back, her feelings were reciprocated. Nya did not see this coming at all. Amari was a gorgeous and smart and just wonderful lioness, there was not a chance in hell that she could not find a suitor, a big strong male with lots of mane and more brawn than brain. She was settling for less with Nya, or at least that was what her insecurity was saying. But Amari put a period on the end of her sentence by going in for a nuzzle. At first, Nya was a little stiff, sitting but stock still as the silver lioness pressed against her chin. But those damn feelings came back, almost swirling around her like a wind as she felt Amari's velvety fur, her soft touches were gentle and kind, Nya could not help but relax into her, allowing herself to breathe as she and Amari took a long moment to love on each other, Nya resting her cheek on the other female's forehead, chuffing pleasantly. "I didn't think... you don't mind that I am female? You could easily go after someone better. You're gorgeous and well spoken, you could have any lion you wanted to, I bet males would form a line outside your den just to meet you."
There was a thoughtful pause, Nya's head still tilted, resting comfortably on Amari's forehead, she did not pull away and the contact made her insides all tingly. She and Amari had nuzzled each other before, they were good friends and Nya had been injured pretty badly when the silver lioness found and took care of her. There was some nuzzling and some cuddling and other things even very early on. But this was different, the same but very different at the same time. Nya did not believe in love at first sight but, as she took a moment to reflect, to think about what this meant and how it had transpired, they really loved each other from day one. Admitting it was hard but it didn't change the fact that they were good friends and would always be good friends and nuzzling her now was different only because it felt right. It was like cool water in a dry season afternoon, refreshing and genuine now that Nya admitted that she only nuzzled her friend so much because she was more than a friend from the get go.
The big lioness chuckled at the thought, at the memory of all of the times that Amari was more than just her friend and, looking back at it, it seemed obvious. Nya had fallen from more than just a steep ridge. She could've had this talk with Amari months ago. Finally pulling away a bit, leaving their shoulders touching and resting her paw on one of Amari's, Nya leveled the silver lioness with a curious gaze.
"What now?" She repeated, eyes then drifting to the rising sun. "Oh I dunno. I don't know enough about this place to know if we should stay. I know the other lionesses give you crap because of your dad but I'm here for you. Someone says some shit to you, to my girl? Oh, there will be carnage, I promise you that."
She paused, now studying the horizon, looking back and forth across it, thinking. She hadn't been wandering the land for long and she was unsure of any really open territory or any accepting prides in the area. But she did not think the nomadic life would suit the two of them, god forbid some horny males roll up on the two of them. They were scrappy but young, an adult lion, especially one with friends, would probably be able to overpower them and while Nya was pretty secure about this, believing that she is infertile, Amari might not be and such an event could destroy her self-esteem among other things. No, whatever they chose to do, safety was top priority. Those deep blue eyes wandered back to the female nuzzling her neck.
"We really do not want to return to my home pride, I can tell you that much. My oldest brother has a small pride nearby, but it's less of a pride and more of a sausage party. I don't think there is a single female in their ranks.... I heard some of the girls talking the other day about one of the lionesses here, Zira, talking about how they are going to leave this place and start anew. We could go with them."

An almost pained look crossed the larger lioness' scruffy face as she grimaced at her own behavior. She had survived so much in her life, from kings and princes down to the lowliest hyena, she traveled from far away mountains, over cliffs and rocky terrain, ridges that stood hundreds of feet tall, the vertigo of seeing the ground so far away that it blurred into one color. She had hunted goats in that land, had waded and swam in croc-infested waters, had trudged through snow so thick that it was up to her chest, her pawpads were hard and callous from a life of risk with no reward. Why on earth was she suddenly clamming up over something so harmless? Fighting a leopard over half a carcass, starving and lonely, sure that was way more intense a moment in her life than this, than talking to a friend... right?
But still Nya hesitated, sitting down to scratch one of her ears with the exposed claws on one of her hindpaws. Her posture was stiff and it was uncomfortable, so as she eased back into sitting up straight, she paused to roll her shoulders. Then, she tried again...
"I just..." And just like that she had no words. She really had never been good with them in really any situation, let alone one this important. She really had to take a moment here, her mind screaming at her to just take the L and try again later, while her heart was ready to tear itself from her chest, begging her to close the distance between her and her object of absolute infatuation. She let Amari talk for a moment, looking out over Pride Rock, trying to pay attention, but she kept looking back at her, at the way the sun danced in her eyes, like she was full of crystal. The blush across Nya's nose deepened.
Still she fumbled for words, finally allowing the silver lioness to catch her friend's uncertain stare. It was like looking into the night sky the way that the early sun brought out every little glimmer she had in those green orbs. And something about it, something in there, combined with a swift gust of wind that seemed to run fingers through that glorious silver coat, Nya was able to swallow the lump in her throat. This was it. Subtlety was not her strong point so why hide behind it? She'd done worse in her time, had seen worse, had been through worse. She didn't know what it was about Amari that she wanted so badly but they'd do a better job of figuring it out together. So taking a long breath through her nose, Nya met that curious gaze head on, her muzzle bridge a visible pink but for a precious second, she was able to ignore it.
"Be with anyone you want huh?" She started, almost against her will, but she did not look away, she held on to this momentary confidence that was keeping her from absolutely crumbling. "How about me?"
There, she said it, it was out there. But just to be sure, as her confidence sort of deflated and she went back to staring at her paws, she was able to mutter one simple solid truth.
"I love you... and not how I love zebra or how I love swimming, it's more like... the way that I love the sunrise, the way that I am happy to see another day has started... that I can then spend it with you. I love you like the stars love the dark, the way that wolves love the moon, you're very special to me Amari, and you don't have to love me back I just... wanted you to know..."

Hearing her name in that voice, that beautiful sing-song way in which she said it, something that was completely unique to Amari, it was happy, enthusiastic, and comforting, it always gave Nya butterflies and, in the strong light of the sun, the rosy blush that spread across her nose was probably very visible. But she pushed on, enjoying a moment of contact with this national treasure of hers. The silver lioness was soft against her rough coat, Nya's coat was thick and plush but the outside layer of it seemed scratchy, a bit prickly. To be fair, she was probably overdue for a bath but even at her best, her coat was a rough textured expanse, whereas Amari's fur was like velvet and her touch, her body heat, Nya chuffed unconsciously, almost purring as she rubbed her cheeks along the light lioness' back. For all that she knew, this could be the last time that she would see Amari. If the silver lioness rejected this momentous occasion in their relationship... Nya didn't know what she would do, but she probably would not be able to stay in the Pridelands after that, to save herself the pain she'd have to survive, the memories she'd have to unmake, it'd be impossible to stick around. So she lingered in Amari's space for another long drawn out moment, simply burying her nose in that velvet and silk, before finally dragging herself away. By this time most of the pride had dispersed so Nya stepped away, taking a moment to calm herself with a sigh-sounding breath.
"I'm not sure where to start..." The big lioness said, her back to Scar's daughter, her eyes on the horizon but she was not really looking at it as much as that was where her eyes came to rest. Her mind was a whirlwind of words and thoughts, of feelings and insecurity, what was right and what was wrong, what she had to say to get Amari to stay, or at least to let Nya go with her, wherever that destination happened to be. But after a moment, she decided to take a leap and just... do the best she could. So slowly, she turned to face the other lioness, her expression soft but troubled. "Have you ever... really liked something? To the point that you want to be around that thing all of the time?"
She paused, something in her mind telling her that she was already doing this wrong so she needed a moment to ask herself what the hell she was doing. But again, that color across her nose told her to keep going, to not let this slip between her paws, this was important and she needed to keep going. She shuffled her feet a little bit, claws gently clicking against the surface of Pride Rock.
"You know, like... a favorite food. Like... um... dew." Blinking, she looked up, seemingly aware of how silly that sounded. But still she repeated herself. "I uh... I love.. dew."

There was nothing in this world more beautiful than sunrise at Pride Rock. The large stone structure was the tallest thing for miles, towering over trees and animals alike, it was huge and impossible not to notice. The sun always seemed to agree. When it rose, it shined its warm and comforting light right through the main opening and into the large interior space where the Pridelander pride lay sleeping. Well... usually anyway. In the brilliant light of the coming day, a lone figure sat on the edge of the rock, her back to the rest of the sleeping pride, casually listening to some of them snore while others shifted and twitched in their sleep. The lioness peered over her shoulder at them, still able to make out most of the lionesses even though the den was dark. But as that brilliant ball of fire rose into the sky, the other lions came alive with colors and markings suddenly on full display. But none of them seemed to awaken.
Nya silently appreciated that.
As she turned to look back over the horizon, a gentle wind toyed with hair hair and fur, almost like soft hands cradling her face, fingers in her thick facial rough, moving up her cheekbones to gently play with her ears, and she closed her blue eyes in bliss. The air was a little cold this morning, it being the height of the wet season, the temperatures were more mild this time of year, to the point that many lions complained, claiming it to be "too cold". But the thick coated Nya only laughed at their complaints. They had no idea what true 'cold' was, she had crossed mountains and waded through snow to get to where she was in life, a gentle chill little breeze did nothing but comfort her, reminded her of 'home'. Or at least, the pride that she thought was her 'home'. A fond memory of her father, talking to her calmly as a gentle breeze flowed between them like water in a river, was replaced by memory of her mother coldly giving her away to the first male suitor who came into the territory. Her bliss turned to disgust and her expression turned twisted and sharp, eyes glaring at the horizon where a mountain range could barely be seen through the distant haze.
But she said and did nothing, letting her hatred for her mother boil for a minute before inaction turned the heat down and the complex stew that was her life settled down again, and the lioness' disturbed appearance softened again to a quiet, thoughtful stoicism. Though she still looked a little angry and distressed, most lions familiar with her knew that she just always looked like that, as though she had smelled something really terrible. A resting bitch face, if you will. But, though she maintained a stone-level of apathy in her face, in her heart and her mind, she was panicking.
She had to talk to Amari, she had to. It had kept her from sleeping all night long, all she did was watch that beautiful white lioness breathe gently into her fur, curled up next to Nya with no fear and no regret, just.... love? The word made the lioness' face skew again. Love was for children, in her experience there was none, you just pop out some kids whenever it's convenient with, often times sired by a male you didn't even know. Love was just... not in the cards for her, she was too damaged, too broken. Amari really could do so much better. But until that day came, Nya was infatuated and it needed to be said, it needed to be shared. Because some lionesses in the pride were talking about leaving, about abandoning the Pridelands and seeking a new unbiased life without the rules and traditions, without the stress of needing to hunt for and feed everyone, without worry or regret, just life. And Nya was immediately nervous about such things. At the moment, it seemed to be all talk but it set loose some butterflies in the lioness, about where Amari stood on the matter. Nya would follow her anywhere, of course, if the silver lioness came to her right now and said 'let's go', Nya would jump up like an excited dog and would of course follow her friend, her god damned crush- god dammit she was in love wasn't she- straight into the pits of hell if that was where she was going.
Still, Nya was a bit nervous about asking. She had no idea how she was going to word things, did not know how to have this complex conversation. She was a doer, not a talker so, she was out of her element and it kept her awake all night long, just cycling through all of the ways that this could go wrong. But, as the sun rose, the time had come and as the pride slowly awoke, Nya waited patiently for everyone to yawn and stretch and there was some talk of breakfast before finally, that lightning bolt of beautiful silver hair appeared from the shadows. Standing, Nya turned to intercept her.
"Amari... Can I... talk to you for a minute?"

The massive lioness shrank a little bit when Amari sounded somewhat... not annoyed but cautious, calling out the larger lioness for her reckless behavior. She shrugged haphazardly, a doofy expression on her face, the kind of cluelessness usually reserved to stupid males. But even she sometimes had her moments where her lack of fear, lack of consideration for her own health and safety, got in the way of some things. Many times, she'd stolen kills from other animals, even large hyena clans and, like her most recent victim, large leopards. She knew to some degree that such a habit was going to get her hurt one day, but as her shrug clearly communicated, she was not worried about that kind of thing. Worrying did not change the future so... she tried her best not to.
"Yeah..." She used a forepaw to rub her head sheepishly, tossing her hair about before smoothing it down again. This wasn't the first time she'd been called out on her recklessness. "I get that a lot."
Sitting back on her haunches, the reddish female gave the horizon a quick scan, as one did when they had fresh meat. Though one leopard was not a threat to the three of them, or even just one, if Nya's display of strength had clearly shown, they could easily take down a small group of scavengers. But hyena clans could have 50 members or more sometimes so she was keen and alert, eying the far savannah wearily before looking back to her companions. Though she did level the maned lioness with some disdain, it was really pretty mild as far as her harsh gazes went and she softened up as Amari seemed to be interested in her take on things.
Some part of Nya had felt bad for judging the pale lioness so much, from the first moment they had met, she'd been a bit of an asshole. But if Amari liked her then Nya knew she had to just deal with it. So, with one last side eye, she dipped her head and tore into the fresh meat of the gazelle's thick and tender hind legs, tearing the fur away with a few licks from her rough tongue. She deliberately dumped her attention into the carcass, trying to give Amari the time and space to talk to the other lioness, knowing that the two were on good terms, friends even. Nya had never really known friendship of any sort before Amari and it was a valuable thing in her mind, precious and fragile, she worried daily about messing it up for her and her silver furred princess. But in this moment she realized that Ma'at was someone Amari called "friend" so, Nya let them chat, tried her best to not be too rude or too... prickly. Even though Ma'at was right, she always seemed to arrive just before Nya did and was becoming a pretty consistent third wheel. But it was clearly unintentional so it was difficult for the larger lioness to really hold it against her. Who knows, maybe the Circle of Life was doing it on purpose, one could never be sure.
"It's too hot to really do much of anything right now." The ruddy lioness started, her words a little muffled as she talked around a mouth full of food like some kind of manner-less barbarian. But she did pause to finish her strip of meat, swallowing and licking her whiskers with her tongue before continuing. "Just thought I'd find myself a snack and a place to nap. The company is just a happy coincidence."
There was a pause as Nya used her forepaws and dark claws to tear more of the gazelle apart to expose some of the more tender slices of meat. She could've eaten the entire kill herself in this manner, seeming almost desperate to get as much meat in her belly as possible. But she had only been in the Pridelands for a little while, she was still getting used to the fact that food didn't need to be fought over here, there was plenty for everyone. Suddenly, her ears perked and she looked over at Ma'at with narrowed eyes.
"Oh so you're the one taking care of that little cub." She said, remembering a few times when she and the little brown cub had crossed paths. At one point he had even attempted to play with her, jumping on her back and fussing around with her ears. But all she needed to do was growl a little bit and the cub jumped down and scurried away. He seemed like a handful for whomever was in charge of him. Apparently, that job had fallen on Ma'at. "He's uh.... an annoying little shitlord nice, I guess. Glad someone is looking after him."

The maned lioness' timing could not have been more poetic. Just as she reached the rock on which the silver lioness lounged, there was a sudden bellowing noise, not quite a roar but close, a deep throaty growl of sorts that was usually used as a way to find other pridemembers not in sight. It rolled across the ground like thunder, shivering the very stone on which the leopard walked and, experienced and well versed in the food chain here in the savannah, the spotted cat froze instantly. Wide eyes scanned the grasses somewhat wildly, looking left and right frantically trying to discern where the noise had come from, but just as it had abruptly sounded, it had abruptly end, and for a tense moment that seemed to drag on forever, the hunter waited, still eying every bush and every stalk of grass. They were so focused on listening for the sound again that they forgot how important it was to use all senses at all times, not just sound and not just sight, but the very earth beneath their feet. Had they been expecting it, the thundering footsteps would've been obvious. But so disorientated by the roar, the leopard had no time to react.
In a flash of rusted fur, the spotted cat was body slammed by what looked like a pickup truck. The shock of the attack caused the hunter to gasp as the wind was knocked out of them with the force of a god damned rock slide or something, the leopard was absolutely stunned into silence. The corpse in its maw was dropped immediately as the leopard was sent tumbling by the attack. The gazelle's body fell but never touched the ground. Swift as the wind, the massive lioness caught the body in her jaws, holding it up as she glared with hard eyes at the slowly recovering leopard. The hunter did not say anything, they took one moment, one long look at the absolute monster of a lioness before them and immediately started to slink away, low to the ground, tail tucked between their legs. They laughed nervously and left with a cordial 'I'll leave you to your lunch then...' and with a nod of agreement from the lioness, the spotted cat departed as quickly as its legs would carry them.
Nya watched the animal disappear into a nearby stand of trees with a coldness that did not match the warm sunshine. She held it for a moment, making sure that the leopard was good and gone before turning slowly, padding softly back toward the popular sun spot of the broken rock outcrop. She had not been following Amari for once, instead Nya was just hungry and was looking for an easy meal. The sun was high and hot, this was no time to be running around chasing gazelle, a lioness could easily overheat for doing that. So scavenging seemed to be the best option. She'd found a rancid warthog on her way out of the Pridelands, somewhat hopeful that the victim would be one of Simba's annoying cohorts, Pugsley or whatever his name was, it certainly smelled bad enough to be him. But it wasn't, and the corpse was so... unsatisfying in the way that it was rotting, not even the buzzards wanted it. So she'd moved on, simply looking for some way to easily get some food. Spotting Amari on the rocks had literally been an accident. For a crucial moment, the beautiful young lioness distracted her and she thought she'd missed her chance to nab a kill from someone else, well aware of the large gazelle herd nearby. But it turned out that her timing was not as bad as it had initially seemed and after leaving the leopard with some broken ribs, she finally not only had something to eat but also someone to share it with.
She padded over to the object of her deepest affections, at first not noticing the third lioness approaching from the other side of the rock. But as Nya jumped up onto the stone, she noticed the other female's head and ears just barely peeking out over the edge of the rock formation. She did not roll her eyes but she wanted to. It seemed like she and Amari could never have a minute to themselves, someone always seemed to be following her and it was annoying, even a bit triggering for the larger lioness. For all of her physical bulk and brazen attitude, Nya was actually super insecure so they really needed to have a talk about... well...
Clearing her throat to draw attention, the massive lioness dropped the gazelle at her feet next to Amari. Though she took a sec to fire a glare at the maned lioness, she did remember her from the cave in the Elephant Graveyard and thus seemed to relax. She took a moment to step over the gazelle and give the lovely silver lioness a good cheek rub and a huffing 'hello' chuff.
"I... uh..." She blinked, wondering if she had overstepped and immediately backing out of Amari's space sheepishly. It interrupted her thought process so it took a moment for that tough and serious exterior that she had built around herself to regain its strength. Suddenly, she was a cub in front of her first crush, a little timid, looking down at her paws as she shifted her weight a little nervously. "I brought lunch..."

Nya huffed, grinning a bit to hide the fact that Iniko was right, that she had suffered had suffered a lot, in her time on this earth- her mother hated her, one of her brothers was probably her dad, feeling so... expendable to her peers, and that was only the very surface of her bad memories. But, emotional constipation kept the huge tough lioness quiet at first, trying to turn away from the walls she had built inside herself to keep that emotion from showing. Instead, sure poured her attention into Amari, the same way in which the storm was pouring water all over the land, it was a good thing, a bit of fresh water in the middle of a wasteland, sometimes crying was just good for the soul, letting it all out instead of hiding it away. It was somewhat ironic in fact, that Nya had no trouble comforting Amari with her Daddy Issues and what not, but when it came to her own emotional upheaval, she swept it under the rug and didn't want to talk about it. Part of her found this hilarious, but it was overshadowed by her empathy for the silver lioness she met all of those weeks, probably months actually, ago.
"You know that I understand that sort of thing kitten. I told you about my brothers, they betrayed me all of the time, from just tattling to mom to actual physical altercations. Your peers may have let you down but Iniko is obviously here and ready to help you take on the world."
She paused briefly to groom the back of Amari's head supportively, watching curiously as the smaller lioness folded herself into the smallest shape ever and buried herself in Nya's thick winter coat. Had she been a lighter color, the faint blush that spread across her nose would've been easy to see. Thankfully, her fur was dark enough to hide it, but her goofy grin and body language said it all even despite that. So she tried to focus on the conversation rather than what was happening. Still, subconsciously, her tail wrapped around Amari protectively as she spoke, almost unaware of it.
"And so am I." She paused as the maned lioness spoke up. At first, Nya was a little annoyed, a little skeptical, what could this fairly new stranger have to add to the conversation? But they all seemed to be acting in Amari's best interests, so the massive lioness let said stranger speak, only to find herself agreeing with much that was said. She looked back at Amari, nodding. "My oldest brother used to say this all of the time- Tomorrow is a mystery, yesterday is history, but today is a gift, that's why they call it the present. I didn't really know what it meant until I joined this pride but it makes a lot more sense now."
She paused, crossing her paws in front of her, freezing in place when Amari rested her chin on the back of the larger female's knuckles. That didn't seem like it would be comfortable, but the silver lioness was deliberate in her actions and seemed at peace at Nya's side. The massive female had never seen someone so at ease in her presence, usually her immense size and her short temper chase others away. But Amari has always been different, from the moment that they met, she was calm and accepting, welcoming even. Nya felt like she owed her something for all of that. But she did not say that out loud, knowing Amari well enough to know that she'd argue about it, feeling like helping an injured lioness was not a 'debt', it was just common courtesy. But Nya knew better. She rested her chin on the silver lioness' neck, her fur also a little fluffier than normal simply due to the time of year. It was nothing like Nya's super thick coat but she enjoyed the soft texture anyway.
"Your family doesn't define you, a title doesn't define you. Prince or princess, consort, it doesn't matter. How you act is what really establishes who you are. And you my dear are sweet and kind and all types of helpful... No matter what Simba says or does, you're very deserving of the throne. So maybe leaving is the best option, I dunno. I left my pride ages ago and it turned out pretty great so...."
She finished with a half shrug.
"Whatever you decide, I'll be here along the way. With your sister, I'm sure, and probably with..." She trailed off, using her free paw to gesture vaguely in the maned lioness' direction. Nya had been involved with Amari long enough to know her sister's name, if little else. But the maned lioness was still a stranger and Nya did not know what to call her, so she gave the other lioness a chance to introduce herself. "... Yeah, you know. I think we all just want you to be a happy kitten. So if you leave, you will not be leaving alone."

Listening to everyone sort of explain in turn, Nya nearly leaped from her position against the back wall, army crawling on her belly a bit to be closer to Amari. She did this a lot, especially in the den in Pride Rock, she always wanted to be near the silver lioness, she was kind of her only friend in the world, the only lion she had any connection with in this strange new land. So when her eyes glistened in the fading light, suddenly shining like jewels, as though her tears were stars against a black backdrop of her pupils, Nya sprang into action. If someone ever dared to come at Amari sideways, Nya knew exactly what she would do and how, physical threats were her expertise. But emotions were a puzzle that the huge lioness had not yet figured out, since everyone's emotions had different effects depending on the who, what, where and why of everything. So, though she did not know what exactly to do to keep Amari from hurting from something so... intangible, Nya still gave it her best shot, crawling over to her friend until the silver lioness was almost sandwiched between her and Iniko. She tilted her head again, looking at Amari with very soft eyes, showing a level of empathy that she had probably never shown anyone before.
"I think she's right." Nya started softly, resting a paw over one of Amari's supportively, her other paw tucked delicately under her chest, disappearing beneath her thick winter coat. "I for one think you are not born a princess, you earn the title, you earn that respect and that adoration. And you, kitten, have definitely earned it. You're a kind soul despite what others say about your father. It's not right to be judged like that."
She paused, eyes scanning the room, nodding to the maned lioness in agreement.
"My birth pride also had lots of weird rules and traditions, though I will spare you all the details..." She kind of trailed off as her mind brought up all of the memories of incest and of deformed cubs that died way too early in their lives, while also remembering the cubs that did survive but were somehow twisted on the inside. Sometimes she wondered how such observations described her. Though Nya did not know if she was a child of incest, in fact she probably was not as her so called "father" was not part of the pride. But it still made her cringe a little, remembering all sorts of disgusting things between the males of the pride, and because she was the only female. It was a rough string of thoughts and she paused to let them pass before opening her mouth again.
"I didn't fit in much either, was no princess, that's for sure. Even though I was pretty much the only female besides my mother. You'd think that would've made me important but no."
She paused again, sneering at the long buried memories of being traded to another pride like she was a slab of meat. She tried not to think about it, to think about her own father's death, the disrespect that she experienced from that, it was eerily similar to what Amari and her sister were explaining. Nya was shocked to notice that she too could relate.
"My dad also died unceremoniously. There were no tears for him, no time to mourn, hell we never even found his body. It sucks, it does. Even without the political power and the fancy titles, losing a parent is like losing a part of yourself... But it's not everything. You have to remember your own power, your own strength and resolve. You don't need Daddy to be an absolute boss in life, you do not get that from his spirit out there..."
She trailed off, eying the storm outside as rain continued to fall and fog began to roll in. But it was a brief moment of thought that Nya did not elaborate on. Instead, she unfolded her paw and pressed her toes to Amari's chest gently, feeling the smaller lioness' heart beating against her pawpads.
"You get it from his spirit in here."

Nya's dark eye patches winked as she blinked her blue eyes dumbly, aware that the red lioness answered her question but something about it, about talking with an essential stranger, just misregistered in her mind, so she blinked, trying to pay more attention to the words and less attention on the fact that she and Amari had to share their time with these other interlopers. She had really been hoping for a chance to spend more personal time with the silver lioness, and was both bummed and made somewhat anxious by their presence. But she also knew it would be ludicrously rude to make everyone else leave, so she tried her best to look normal and not give away her anxiety. Fortunately, Amari was well aware of the larger lion's discomfort even despite her attempts to hide it. It took Nya a minute to notice that the fur tickling her side was not her own, and though at first she looked down at the black tip on that graceful tail as though she had no idea who it belonged to, but after a moment her preoccupation with her anxiety faltered and she did level Amari with a tilt of her head and a smarmy sort of smile that revealed some of her teeth in the darkness of the skull. A normal lion might've been unnerved, but Nya simply smiled like that, a shit-eating sort of flavor to almost all of her expressions, but Amari never seemed bothered, so she expressed more often when with her.
The tail play was just enough to allow the gigantic lioness a moment of reprieve and she looked back at Iniko as she finished explaining and Amari jumped in to clarify. Nya tilted her head immediately, a little baffled.
"Wait... Haunted?" She started, trying not to sound too critical. "By your dad? So like... his ghost is just supposed to be walking around out here?"
The scruffy lioness shook her head as she tried to process that train of thought. She of course never knew her father. She was sure that she had one out there somewhere, but who it was and how many of her siblings were from him, she'd had a huge family as a cub, she had no idea. She'd been curious sometimes, wondering if she'd ever just come across him one day, but other than that, she had no desire to ever see her dad alive, let alone as a spirit. That brought up so many questions that her mind, she did not know where to begin. The maned lioness had a more... acceptable sort of response, talking about emotions and relevant things like that. But Nya was an emotionally constipated pile of garbage so her thoughts were far from being as reasonable. She blinked again.
"Weird... Was he... you know, evil or anything? Why would he not be in the sky with the other Great Kings? I mean, that's a strange thing to think about your own father I guess... but don't ghosts stick around because of unfinished business? I mean, if the legends are true anyway..."

Though startled by the sudden introduction of a fourth lioness, Nya kept her tough composure, watching through narrowed eyes as Iniko- Amari's sister- burst onto the scene. The large lioness had not really had the time or energy or even really the care or consideration to formally meet and introduce herself to the young red shaman, but they had crossed paths before, several times in fact. She was often with Amari, the two being very close, something Nya could not relate to. She knew her brothers, well... at least she knew of her three littermates, there was another 20 or 30 males out there who were siblings that she knew nothing about. But even though she spent a lot of time with them- training and playing, learning to hunt and to swim and just... everything, they maintained a sort of distance and disdain for each other than Amari and her sister seemed to lack, probably because Nya was the only female in her family. Plus, she was way bigger than any of her siblings so, as they got older, she became less and less fun to play with, she was too rough and her spineless brothers always complained. So to some degree, the blue eyed lioness was jealous, watching coldly as Iniko slipped into the den without any resistance. Amari welcomed her warmly.
But she didn't voice this unease she felt being part of such a big group of strangers or the lack of familiarity she had toward the sisters' close bond. Instead, she merely side-eyed the white lioness, noticing her mane immediately. Most lions probably judged the poor female for it, they probably whispered things behind her back and she was probably self-conscious about it, Nya could only guess. Everyone in the pride was more scared of her than teasing or judgmental. Some part of her felt sorry for her for that, the rest of her was honestly jealous. Nya often dreamed of growing a mane, of appearing more male than female. She wanted that, the power and the authority that came from such a unique beast. Plus she wouldn't look so strange. As a maneless female, she was gigantic and it was weird for her gender. But if she could come off as male... it wouldn't be so odd, in fact she'd probably be rewarded for such a thing, honored and respected, a star in the pride instead of an outcast.
Though she tried to leave her thoughts in her mind, Nya's sneer remained and, after a short and silent pause, she picked up her wildebeest leg and followed the others into the small den, having to duck her head to fit in the space. She dropped the meat at Amari's feet near the entrance.
"Just wanted to make sure you had some dinner." She said, now a reasonable distance from the silver and white lioness. The power and the roughness conveyed in her posture faulted a bit, Nya bowing her head respectfully and kind of sheepishly avoiding eye contact, hoping the other female would appreciate the unnecessary gift. Nya was always bringing her stuff, considering the other teenager a good friend, but she knew somewhere deep down that there was more to the two of them than she allowed herself to express. Her sneer fell away and she looked sheepishly at the ground, watching her paws as she shifted her weight from side to side. "You know I'm not a fan of those big Pride dinners..."
She paused, looking around the small space, trying to find someplace to put herself, eventually choosing to lay down against the back wall, where she took a moment to bunch up some moss to make for a really soft little nest that she curled into. Still, she looked around, a little mystified. Having only been part of the pride for a short period of time, Nya had never seen or even really heard of the Elephant Graveyard.
"I'm surprised that this skull is so big that all of us can fit in here... How did you all know about this place?"

Nya hated the rain. She hated to be wet in general, after a certain male in her past made a big fuss about it, about rolling in mud and swimming in the river. The memory always made her shudder and it stopped her mid-step, flooding her mind and body with a kind of cold and untouchable pain. She closed her blue eyes against it and shook her head from side to side, clearing her mind again and allowing her to focus on her task. She had missed the pride meal, she still felt like something of an outsider. Where most Pridelanders were friendly and socially active, Nya was more reserved. She liked to be around a few friends, animals that she'd trust with her life, but usually crowds of more than three or four were a huge turn off for her so, she skipped the night's meal, instead waiting for the cover of night to wash over them so that she could hunt for herself. She was just used to doing things like that and, having a bit of a pig's head to her decisions, she had a hard time letting go of her past life as a rogue. It wasn't a bad life, it was just... different. She simply was not used to sharing her food with thirty other lions.
The rain had started suddenly, as was usual in Africa, the hiss of water striking dried earth could be heard for minutes before the rain actually reached you, and, desperate to stay dry, the lone lioness had rushed her hunt a bit. Even in a good mood, she was a lousy hunter, let alone when in a rush. However, her determination and stubbornness won out and she ended up carrying the leg of a wildebeest back toward Pridelander territory. Though she was hungry, the leg wasn't for her. So as she passed through the local lands, she was stopped suddenly when she noticed the muddy prints in one of the more familiar paths. It lead to the Elephant Graveyard- a small but haunting place, she did not like to go there, it always seemed like the wind was whispering to you, calling your name, haunting your dreams, teasing and sinister. But, always determined to get what she wanted, the young lioness had no trouble turning onto the freshly used path to find the real owner of the wildebeest leg in her mouth.
Following Amari's trail was always something special to Nya, though she'd never admit it. She always looked down as she did it, placing her paws beside the soft slightly rain washed prints of the other female. As usual, Nya's paws were huge by comparison and part of that observation always made her brow furrow. Her size was scary and intimidating, many females turned tail and ran, worried that if they irritated the blonde lioness, she'd lash out on them and use one swipe of her muscular foreleg, she'd take another lioness' head clear off of her shoulders. But, though she liked to fight, Nya was rarely challenged in her pursuits, and some part of her was okay with that, it often made getting things easier for her. But it also kept others at a distance so she walked alone, following the faint shadow of another lioness, desperate for some companionship but also repulsed by it, terrified of it. She didn't have time for cuddles and pillow talk.
Did she?
Nya never got the opportunity to answer that question. She followed the trail through the grass into the bare dirt and bones of the graveyard. Though the looming piles of bone looked unsteady and the deep stench of death that was lifted into the air by the falling rain, Nya pressed on, her ears low and her eyes cautiously looking around, trying to figure out where her lion of interest might be hiding. That was when she heard the white lioness' name being called and immediately, the wandering hunter made a b-line to the noise, thinking the worst almost automatically. She picked up the pace into a trot and, sure enough, as she rounded the corner from the back of a large skull to the front that she was confronted by the scene.
Another lioness was there, poking her head into an opening in the front of the skull, between the two massive tusks that curled from the dirt and stood high into the sky. Immediately, Nya went into protective mode, her teeth tightening around the meat in her mouth. She slowed her approach from a desperate trot to a cautious walk, tilting her head curiously, watching the strange figure uneasily. She dropped the meat to the ground suddenly, letting it simply fall into the dust with a thump that was more felt than heard. She never stopped pinning the strange lioness with a biting glare, sharper than a dagger's edge. Her muzzle tensed until she was almost snarling.
"Yeah, kitten..." She said loudly, eying the stranger more than she was worrying about Amari's condition in the slightly chilled air, though she was clearly addressing the maneless lioness who was still unseen in her little den. Nya cleared her throat a bit. "... you in there? Want to tell me what's going on?"

She comes from an area far far south of the Pridelands and, having lived in the mountains there, she is used to snow and the cold, though heat makes her uncomfortable, which is why she tries not to hunt during the day. Her coat is a warm almost red sort of orange-tan coloration, somewhat similar to Scar though she has no biological connection with him. She has a super scruffy patch of hair on her head that can sometimes droop into her face and obscure her vision, but she brushes it away pretty regularly, most of the time it's not a problem. Her underside and paws are slightly lighter in color than the rest of her, and her dark blue eyes sit in the center of dark patches around each one. Her tail tip is dark brown, her claws are always extended and are black in color. As a teenager, she still has some growing to do but she promises to be a huge lioness as she is already pretty big, even though she is only a teenager. She uses this to her advantage a lot- flirting with other girls by showing off her muscles and physical prowess. But she also unafraid to stand up for herself or others around her as she is pretty convinced that she could wipe the floor with almost anyone. She has a bite wound in one ear, a gift from her mother when she was younger and had a tendency to mouth off at her, it was their first real argument and her mother was so appalled that she lashed out in a moment of pure rage and a young Nya had to fight the grown lioness off. She has no other scars or visible injuries other than that, however. the personality Personality • Having lived the life that most other animals would be afraid to, Nya comes off to strangers as a self-absorbed asshole. She curses like a sailor, she is honest in all pursuits, and she will absolutely give you a piece of her mind if you get in her way. She can be a little moody in this way, often angered by something but is then unwilling to talk about it, leaving others to simply guess what has her so upset. Sometimes, she is better off on her own, alone with her thoughts so she does not lash out at anyone who might come along and try and help the troubled teenager. But Nya is an introvert and, even when things are going well for her, she still has a tendency to avoid others, to be something of a wall flower, simply disappearing into the background.
It takes a long time and a lot of work to earn her trust, and even once you have it, it can be hard to tell, as she has always pushed others away out of habit, out of fear, she desperately does not want to be hurt anymore. In her younger years, she was far more bold and adventurous, a naive little cub. Now she is wiser and more skeptical and suspicious of others manipulating her or only talking to her because they want something. She's never really had the love and attention of her peers and while she knows something in her mind is missing, she seems to be unable to help herself when it comes to romance and dating, she is often a little too forward, a little too desperate. She can be incredibly stubborn- once she sees something she wants, she's going to get it, come hell or high water, which is often too intense for more laid-back lions. But she recently came across a beautiful white lioness who has taken her attention. She is beautiful, kind and very smart, Nya is smitten. She won't admit it to anyone but she is attached to Amari by the hip and, though cold and sometimes even hostile to strangers, friends and family like Amari get to see the blonde lioness' softer side. Turns out she loves to cuddle, who knew?
Likes • Sleeping, takes frequent naps | Fighting, both physical and verbal, she loves to debate | Loyalty and sincerity | Small groups of close friends | Hyenas Dislikes • Being told what to do, especially if done so because of her young age | Water, rain, just being wet in general | People who cannot take a joke | Stoic and serious types, silence annoys the hell out of her | Being treated like a child
History • Nya's relatively short life has been a whirlwind of traumatic events, which has then turned her into a little bit of an asshole now that she is approaching adulthood. Nyongeza was born one early November morning, one of a litter of four. The other three cubs were male, as were her older siblings from previous generations. Her home pride was massive in this way- the Queen was notoriously fertile with a tendency to give birth to multiple cubs at a time. So Nya was never lonely, her twin brothers were a little meek and a little shy with more reserved personalities, so the outspoken outgoing Nya often played with her older brothers instead, building up muscle and skill by constantly play fighting with each other. While at first, the older cubs enjoyed these games, as Nya grew in size, her brothers had less and less fun fighting her. She was simply too fierce, and too big, for them to handle her anymore. So eventually, the play time faded away and Nya started to feel lonely, almost abandoned. Even her twin brothers seemed to be frightened of her. So she learned how to entertain herself, wandering away from the pride to explore and try her hand at hunting. She was just not patient enough to be a good huntress.
As she came into her teenage years, Nya was shocked and surprised when her mother broke some terrible news. Nya had never really developed a relationship with her mother, the lioness was obsessed with having cubs for some reason. When Nya was younger, she had explained the situation, something about needing more females in the pride, since it was mostly males at this time. But her story faded with age and she just pumped out cubs like she was some sort of baby-making machine. And while she was a very prickly parent with terrible bedside manner, when they were little and reliant on her, she was a fantastic mother. But once the cubs were old enough to walk around on their own, she'd disappear for a time, obviously off getting pregnant again. And, since the pride was 90% her offspring, the ridiculous amounts of incest was problematic. Thankfully, Nya came out pretty okay- she has no physical deformities but her mental state is questionable. Still, she had to care for her ailing brothers, many of them dying young, simply overcome by deformations of their hearts and lungs. And yet her mother was constantly running around pregnant, not caring at all that she was flooding the world with miserable offspring that were innocent and suffering because of her decisions. So Nya has no love for her mother and, thank goodness, the lioness also wanted nothing to do with her daughter.
Nya's father on the other hand absolutely adored her. He was the king of the pride through title only, her mother had picked him because of his size and strength. However, he did not approve of the female and her tendency to get pregnant every two seconds, often with her own sons, it was terrible and the male felt bad that he simply could not perform often enough to satisfy his mate's desire for cubs. But, kind and lawful, he just wanted his children to be happy, and Nya was particularly special to him- he grew up with all sisters so he could relate to her on a level that no other male could. His favorite thing to do for her was sing, he had an amazing singing voice and had a particular song that he'd sing to her, illustrating that while she might not think she is special or significant, the song insisted that everyone has a part to play in the Circle of Life and no matter how big or small that part was, it was still needed for the world to work the way that it does. It was a nice thing to hear when you're a young cub. He absolutely spoiled her with things like this, telling her stories and testing her intelligence with games and playtime. So when her mother called her into the main den, looking very somber, Nya immediately knew that something was not right.
Her father was dead.
No one seems to know why or how he died, and Nya in particular adhered to the idea that her mother killed him when he could not perform to her ridiculous sexual expectations. But there was no body to study, no places to examine, the female kept her mouth shut about the whole thing and it made Nya not only suspicious but hostile. She wanted to know who killed the greatest male in the world and why, her father was a kind soul, the only person who never got along with him was his Queen., so, fueled by this relevant coincidence, Nya's relationship with her mother took a nose dive. They argued and fought all of the time for months and months, Nya absolutely aware of her short temper and her inability to forgive and forget. But her father had been her rock, he was her Superman, and to have him just brushed aside like he was nothing infuriated her.
So her mother did something drastic. Tired of all of the yelling and fighting, the lioness just said "fuck this" and sent Nya away, trading her to another pride in exchange for one of their females. Nya was immediately betrothed to a young male in the pride, but she was not interested and instead kept to herself, drifting slowly away from her new family as time passed. The male that she was betrothed to was not happy with her distance and was constantly chasing, harassing, and attacking her, even forcing himself upon her. But she was growing like crazy, to the point that even at her young age, she outweighed her prospective husband and absolutely beat the crap out of him in retaliation. It was just so chaotic that Nya quickly got over it and, after drifting away slowly, one day she just bailed completely, heading off to god knows where, as long as it wasn't a nomadic pride or some weird or crazy cult of lions or anything like that.
She stumbled upon the Pridelands by accident, literally walking along a ridge that bordered part of their territory. She was admiring Pride Rock from afar when, distracted, she mis-stepped and ended up tumbling down the ridge. She was not badly injured but, having hit her head, she did have a bit of a concussion. At first, she just shook it off, but almost immediately her balance was gone, she was slurring her words and could not concentrate on pretty much anything, very dazed and confused. She does not remember much of what happened after she fell. Her next memory was her waking up on Pride Rock with a white lioness resting comfortably beside her, cold nose buried in her fur. At first, she was disgusted and wanted to get up immediately and figure out where the hell she was and how to escape. But as she watched the young lioness sleep, something seemed to anchor Nya to the ground. She felt like she couldn't move, but was not trapped, she was just.... tired maybe? Yeah that was probably it, she wanted to sleep some more. Who cares who this beautiful white lioness was?
Turns out she did. The other female introduced herself as Amari and after caring for her head wound a bit, Nya ended up following the lioness out into the sunshine to be shown around the territory. And the outlander was absolutely smitten. Amari was smart, she knew the Pridelands well and told the story of Scar- the rightful king, she had said. Nya had no idea who Scar was but she was massively infatuated with her new female friend so, when Amari expressed disgust in the way that her father was treated at the end of the day, Nya blindly agreed, especially because she could relate to the idea of suddenly losing your father. So she is on Team Zira but really only makes this claim because she wants to be with Amari, above all else. The two share a bond that is just unlike anything Nya has ever encountered. She didn't expect to want to stay in the Pridelands, even after falling for Amari, she was planning to tell the white lioness to leave with her, to run away and start their own pride with their own rules. But life in the Pridelands was hella comfortable so, for now, she has no problem sticking around, Wherever Amari is, that is where Nya wants to be.
the FAMILy Father • Halisi (Hal for short)Mother • Katili (whereabouts unknown) Siblings • Though she had about 26 siblings, she only really got to know her three littermates- Mamba, Nyoka (Nyo), and Chatu. Moja is her oldest brother, an adult now, he lives close enough to the Pridelands that he visits from time to time. (currently an NPC but hit me up if you want to play him). Barafu is another of her many brothers who joined Moja in a small pride, jealous of his brother's place of power and his close relationship with Nya, he is not a nice lion and is planning on killing his brother to take over their pride, as well as killing Nya and her mate just out of spite (again, he is currently an NPC but hit me up if you want to play him). Mate • Amari <3 (well eventually, they are just barely moving beyond friends atm) Offspring • None Others • Mkaidi- Maternal Grandmother, Molo- friend, spotted hyena, Arnay- friend, spotted hyena, Dahdah- friend, spotted hyena the role player Name • Heapass Nickname • Heapass is fine, can be shortened to Heap, my real name is Joey which some of my friends use sometimes Age • Thirty Password • Don't post this until you're COMPLETELY finished with your app. Other Characters • Tojo roleplay Sample Missy had always been a finicky horse, which was not saying a lot since she was only a few years old, still a teenager by horse standards. She was still getting used to eating solid food, still getting used to the idea that her mother was now ten stalls down the row from her rather than being within muzzle reach, and the whole concept of life in this big, bad adult world seemed to hit the leggy filly hard. It was not odd for her to reject her feed every few days or so. But she'd pace, get some exercise the next morning and return that night for dinner sporting a healthy appetite again and all would be well. Not eating for three days straight was a bit odd, even for her and her young jaw, her unground teeth.
That was how the oldest De Luca child found the cremello filly that damp evening- pacing restlessly in her stall, a full bag of oats hanging from the sliding wood door to her stall, still heavy and completely untouched. She was starting to wear a track in the bedding on the floor as well, a perfect oval of kicked sawdust marking every step of her shoed hooves for the past 72 hours, where as all of the other horses, her mother included, stood stock still in the slowly darkening evening air. They probably had never worn tracks in their stalls in their lives. Carson's eyebrows dropped toward his brilliant blue eyes in an expression of deep puzzlement. To be fair, Missy was always a fidgety filly- taking after her sire and sporting boundless amounts of energy, she promised to be an excellent racehorse one of these days. But a healthy amount of energy was also usually accompanied by a crazy appetite, and even when at her most finicky, she'd go maybe six to twelve hours maximum without nibbling on something. This three day stint was unheard of.
Unsure of what else to do, the tallest of the De Luca family used his long strides and well built legs to close the small gap between himself and his favorite horse, casually coming to a stop with his chest leaned against the soggy wooden doorframe. Outside of the stables, the sky was cast over with darkened clouds and a lazy rain fell from the heavens in low, gentle rumbles. But the shingled roof was solid and the thoroughbred paused in her stall to eye the soaking wet figure that now peered at her through the bars, swiveling her ears once or twice curiously before silently walking over to where his hand lay outstretched through the door. Without hesitation, she sniffed and then casually nibbled his extended fingers, tugging on the wet sleeve of his jacket, as though to ask why he'd be foolish enough to come out here in the bad weather. But the werewolf only smiled knowingly at the animal and patted her nose gingerly.
"What's the matter with you? Your favorite rolled oats and you've barely touched 'em."
