your heart and my heart are very old friends... Jua had been traveling for days, intent on reaching the Pridelands within the week. She'd traversed a strange marshland, inhabited by mysterious wisps of glowing air and savage weasels. She'd nearly tumbled into a sinkhole more than once, and she felt like her fur would never fully dry out from the extensive wading. Still, the marshes were better than the desert, whose sandy expanse was something out of her nightmares. Not only were her toes probably burnt, but the persistent sand hidden within her coat was enough to make her scream. She absolutely detested sand and its ability to find its way into every crevice of skin and sit between strands of her fur like gritty, heavy glitter.
Still, she'd finally reached the Backlands - a place that seemed much more wild than other kingdoms she had visited. She heard that this land was divided up between solitary leopards, but had yet to come across one in her brief time in the territory. Her first stop had been the watering hole, drawn to the large, pristine lake by the sound of its massive waterfall. Wading into the water to cleanse her fur, she soaked for a few minutes with her eyes closed, enjoying the sensation of the cool water lapping against her body. The sun bore down on the surface of the water, warming the first few inches enough that Jua felt the need to dunk herself under and cool herself entirely. It was a brilliant sensation, the water pushing through her fur and knocking all the sand and mud loose. Her toes felt like they were floating, the cool water running over her callouses and sun-burnt skin like air under a bird's wing. The swim felt therapeutic, like it was both relaxing and healing her as she continued to float and re-submerge multiple times.
After a few minutes of swimming, Jua returned to the edge of the watering hole, shaking the excess water from her fur. Looking for a sunny spot to dry off, she plodded to a flat, sun-soaked rock and spread out on top of its warm surface, relishing in the contrast of heat to the coolness of her skin. A relaxed moan escaped her body, her muscles yearning to relax after the long, quick pace she had made the last few days. Yes, she deserved this rest.
Slowly, Jua drifted off into relaxed slumber, the nap coming naturally. After all, most other predators would not come out during the day, and water holes were usually areas of peace. At least, in every other land she had visited, those were the unofficial rules. Not wanting to think too much over it, Jua let herself doze, a small snore squeaking from her dusty brown nose.

@jua Though it was hard to do at the moment, the memories of life in the Pridelands invading his mind, wandering through the Backlands was still a fun and thrilling trek. The forests here were massive, densely packed with strange foliage. The trees here seemed to have more needle-like leaves, rather than the broad, flat leaves of acacia trees, and though some were very tall, there was still little space beneath them to really stretch out and rest. So the golden lion had slept out in the open, though again the forest was dense as all get out, perhaps sleeping somewhere among the tall overgrown grasses was just as good as being practically swallowed by the nearby trees. But it was neither here nor there, Tojo woke up that morning the same way he had the day before and the same way that he anticipated waking up the following day. He gave a big, long, languid stretch, his forepaws reaching for something above his head while his hindpaws simply curled in, his tail thrashing once before going stiff, as if it were stretching its muscles as well. Satisfied with the amount of popping coming from his joints after a few reaches and stretching, the great golden lion slowly, lazily, rolled to his feet and paused to look around. Although he had flattened a small area of tall grass for him to sleep in, it was clear that no one had come to visit him in the night- the grass was all straight and tall, no trails, no roads, no landmarks, just trees and tall, dry, itchy grass, it made his skin crawl even if all he did was look at it. Despite it, he was having a great time exploring the forest. The Pridelands didn't have a forest- sure it had the tall grass but that was as far as the similarities were going to get. The Pridelands were spacious and wide open, lots of big blue swaths of sky above a featureless field, but the Backlands were somehow darker, especially out here in the woods, the trees were so dense that barely any sunlight reached the ground, and while the young lion had no trouble seeing what was around him, it still gave off a dark, almost haunted, impression. Going about his morning business, Tojo dragged over a large antler that he had found on the ground, delighted because he had never seen antlers so large before, it was both fascinating and good for his teeth. He laid down in his little patch of flat grass, chewing away at the hardened structure, taking away each prong slowly... very slowly.... frustratingly slowly. Tojo chewed for what must've been hours, the chewing keeping his teeth clean but not really doing anything to fill his tummy. So, hungry after a while, the golden lion stood, shook himself free of dead grass and pine needles before setting off in a random direction. Coming across the water hole that Jua was in was an absolutely happy accident, he'd been looking for her for days now and he had much say to her about their relationship, most of which would be him admitting that he was an idiot, promising to pay more attention to her needs and not be so pre-occupied with others. At first, he did not know that she was there, drawn from the shadows of the woods to the small lake... large pond? He actually did not know the difference. But either way, as he stepped out of the shadows, he was so busy marveling at the beautiful scenery that his paws crossed awkwardly and it sent him tumbling into the water. He sat up, the water was shallow this close to the shoreline, but he was still head-to-toe soaked, but was able to avoid drowning by simply sitting up. As he sighed at himself was when he noticed the sound of water moving out of the way of a large object. What he'd expected was a log or an entire stubborn plant, what he did not expect was for the odd shape in the water to have eyes, and for those eyes to be trained on him. Grumpy about being wet, Tojo squinted suspiciously at the other swimmer, ready to curse them out or something until the distance between them was filled. He cocked his head to one side. "Jua?" He paused, gave her a chance to respond. He got the feeling that she was still kind of mad at him for being a terrible, self-absorbed, doofus, but the feeling was in his mind, it might not necessarily have been in hers. Still, he blinked at her. "Why did I always think that you hated water? Was that just me?"

you always were clumsy, my darling... Her nap had been fairly short, just enough to dry her out before the sun baked into her coat. Her dreams had been odd, dancing images of the places she'd visited most recently twirling through her mind, interrupted by fleeting glimpses of Tojo. It had been a long time since she had seen him, and her heart still felt stiff at the mention of his name. Sure, she had taken a lover or two since she left, but nothing compared to the sweetness and purity that was her first love with Tojo. She wasn't too perplexed by the fact she was dreaming of him, after all, ever since she had left the mountains she had known the ultimate goal was to track him down and apologize. Her recovery after the avalanche not only healed her leg, but her heart as well... and if he was willing to give her another chance, she wanted to try.
Feeling a bit too heated from the sun, Jua had decided to once more take a dip into the cool water, but this time just in the shallows. She didn't want to get her head wet but floated lazily, touching the bottom with the tips of her toes to keep afloat. She used to not be the biggest fan of water, only bathing if necessary. Ever since her accident, though, Jua had learned to appreciate the healing and comforting properties of water. The mountains where she had her accident and subsequent recovery were littered with steamy hot springs. The gorillas had educated her on the water's healing properties, and without her daily swims and soaks, she wouldn't be here today. She had since enjoyed the occasional swim, especially after traversing particularly nasty places like the marsh and desert.
Imagine her surprise when an awkward thump was heard nearby, followed by a large object careening into the water, splashing her once dry head. Blinking away the excess water, Jua felt anger color her cheeks and her voice almost rose to yell at the intruder, when... no, it couldn't be, could it? That was much too coincidental.
Jua blinked a little faster, her mouth closing and expression changing to one of confusion. Before she could speak and ask the intruder if he truly was who she thought he was, he spoke, and said her name. Confirming her thoughts, she knew that splashing had been an accident. He had always been clumsy, both physically and with his words. His next sentence after her name made her release a short bark of laughter; it seems that he remembered her, after all. She would need to inform him of all the changes she had gone through since she had left. Closing her eyes and opening her mouth in a large smile filled with laughter, Jua pushed herself through the water and onto Tojo's chest, rubbing his cheek with hers. "Oh, Tojo... I've missed you."
It was a simple greeting, but the words were heavy with emotion. Tears threatened to spill from her diamond eyes, and a sob clung to the inside of her throat, making it tight. There was so much she had planned to say to him, but his unexpected arrival had cut her words short and left her speechless. After a moment of silence, she stumbled back from him, embarrassed by her forward reaction, and put a foot of distance between them. Trying very hard not to cry, Jua kept her smile bright and looked him over, chuckling at how wet and disheveled the two of them looked. "What are you doing here? I was on the way to the Pridelands... to look for you."

@jua Picking himself up and out of the water, now standing in the shallows, Tojo initially wanted to give the lioness space. When they had separated, it had been harsh and nasty and, naive and unaware how love really works, he was surprised when she not only approached him, but greeted him affectionately. At first, he just kind of sat that as she buried her face in his mane, but as she moved up to his face, rubbing her cheek against his, the feeling, that warmness, as though someone had lit a fire in his belly, came to him and obedient to his emotions, Tojo mashed his face into her cheek as well, reveling in the familiar feeling of the lioness' short harsh coat. His was softer, fluffy and pleasant, sweet with the scent of coconut. But he did not mind the more scratchy feel of a lioness' maneless fur, if anything it was special, something familiar, something wholesome, and he sat there for a long moment, simply feeling her presence, leaning into her as she leaned into him. Wanting to keep the mood light, the golden lion smiled warmly, at first simply happy to see that Jua did not hold their recent separation against him. He'd long realized that the altercation was his fault. He didn't realize what he had in Jua, just too young and naive to think that love isn't always permanent. When she left initially, he became obsessed with finding her. But as the days past, he lost more and more hope that Jua was out there. By that time, she could've been killed by a rival pride or by hyenas or a fall from a great height or just... anything. He was so happy to see her alive that his whole body seemed to be vibrating, and he took a moment to just enjoy the closeness he'd been missing for all of this time. He could hear in her voice that she too had done some reflecting, made some changes, begged for forgiveness and he was so humbled by that that it almost made his voice shake as well. "I missed you too." He said softly into her ear before finally pulling back from their warm embrace so that they could talk a little more easily. Now almost unaware of it, Tojo sat down in the shallow water, only his paws and tail being completely submerged. Though he had nothing against water, he was simultaneously not a huge fan of it. But his mind was miles away, his smile bright as he cocked his head to one side. "Oh don't cry dearest. I'm here, you found me."Trying to be supportive, Tojo lifted a paw and placed it delicately over one of hers, that warm smile and his bright eyes seeking out hers. "I was looking for you." He started, softly, gently, as though worried that his words were enough to absolutely break the lioness apart. He paused, gears in his mind grinding as his expression, which was already pretty soft, softened even more until it looked like he was the one about to burst into tears. And he probably would have in his younger years, but now a big strong adult male, crying was unbelievably embarrassing. So he held back and took a moment to just look at Jua, to take in her features and commit them to memory. "I uh..." He fumbled with his words, suddenly breaking eye contact as he tried to figure out how to say something that he barely understood. But he knew that he had to try. He made a point to look up at her again and took a shaky but calming breath before continuing. "Wanted to say that I am sorry for what happened. I've never met a lioness quite like you, sometimes I think about how beautiful you are and how I seem to be the luckiest male on the entire planet for having a girl like you. I didn't realize what I had until you were gone."He paused, having to regain his composure as his voice shook a little. But he recovered after a moment. "I am sorry, I'm going to try to be a better mate from now on. This is not the 'Tojo Show' anymore, it's all about the two of us, both of us. Me and you, you and me, together. I did not want to return to the Pridelands without you."

you weren’t the only one at fault... They stared at one another briefly, the silence between them not uncomfortable, but charged as they studied each other’s features. Jua let his words rush over her mind, filling up the hole in her heart with forgiveness and compassion. He had always been so forgiving, so loyal. It had been difficult near the end for Jua to let him go; she had grown dependent on him, and allowed herself to become complacent in their once unbridled passion. Craving more, not understanding what they had, she had walked away. Jua knew now that while necessary in the moment for the both of them to grow, she and Tojo had something special that she couldn’t let go of forever. She would have tried to find him sooner, if it hadn’t had been for her accident and long recovery in the mountains.
His paw gently covered hers and she smiled back at him once more, about to speak again after he mentioned looking for her when his eyes dropped from hers and he burst, words tumbling from his mouth. His expression continued to be soft, full of emotion, just like the Tojo she remembered. Trying to be comforting, she leaned forward to nuzzle his chin when he paused, his voice shaking. Jua was patient, and he continued on after a moment with another apology and the assertion that he wanted her in his life, back in the Pridelands.
Jua pulled back again, shaking her head lightly as she spoke. Crystal blue eyes tugged across Tojo’s face, taking in the minute changes of the last few seasons. He was larger, his mane more full and pelt slightly darker, but his eyes were the same bright blue they had always been, shimmering with kindness. ”Relax, Tojo, tulia. It’s in the past.” She had many things to apologize for as well, but she wanted to assuage his concerns and address what he had said before delving into her own emotions.
”It wasn’t just you, Tojo… I had a lot of growing to do, too.” Her words were whispered, but he could easily hear her over the stillness of the air around them. A sad smile fluttered across her maw briefly before bending into a softer, lighter expression, her eyes searching to capture his in an understanding gaze. ”I… was selfish, and hurt you. It took me a long time to forgive myself for how I ended things.” Jua looked away briefly, thankful for Tojo’s paw on hers as a reminder to think of the now. ”I have so, so many things to say, I just…. I thought I would have more time to think about how to say them.” She laughed, the sound dry.
”I’m... “ she choked on her words slightly, moved by his speech to stay together and be strong. ”I’m sorry... and I'm so, so thankful for you.” she stopped, unsure of how to continue, and chose to step forward again instead of speaking. Her ears tilted back and she tucked her head under his chin again, breathing in his scent with a shaky breath. After a moment she leaned further in, her head moving to his shoulder while her body pressed against his in a soft, slightly damp embrace.

@jua Feeling her nuzzle against his chin, Tojo pitched his head up to give her better access to his soft mane but not high enough as to miss that important connection, that pysical contact that was warm and sweet. He sighed deeply, drowning in his emotions for a moment because he did feel some kind of way for this lioness. When they had separated, he was a wreck, immediately returning home to the Pridelands, bent and broken in ways he did not know a lion could break. It had been as though someone had reached into his chest and pulled out everything- his lungs, his ribs, his backbone, his heart... He had been so... empty, felt like he was sinking into some dark abyss, where not even the light of the sun could reach him. And that was when he arrived back in the Pridelands after days on his own. If he'd learned anything from his life with Jua, it was that he did not want to be alone, not now and not ever. He was a kind and social soul, he needed that connection, needed that warmth, that support. Without it, he felt lost, and had gone searching for it elsewhere. He looked down at Jua again, his expression soft but in a strange way, his eyebrows knitted together and he licked his lips nervously. But whatever bothered him in that moment seemed to dissolve away as Jua really took their cuddling session from zero to one hundred. Pleasantly, he leaned into her, his soft smile back. "Well now, we have all of the time in the world." He started quietly, rubbing his cheek on the female's forehead. "To say what we should've been saying all along."He paused in that moment, pulling away to seek out her face, her beautiful face, those gorgeous eyes, that slant to her nose, her soft features. She was such a gorgeous lioness. How he had gotten so lucky, he'd never know. He got stuck on that thought for a moment that dragged between them. It was clear that he had something to say, but was distracted by this absolute angel of a female. He smiled at her, bright and warm. "You know, things like..." He paused again, thinking, sorting through the millions of songs and praises that he wanted to shout out so the whole world could hear him. He settled on something very basic. "Like... I love you."It seemed so small, even as he said it. It didn't feel like enough. He'd said 'I love you' to his parents, he'd talked about the love that he had for nature and the creatures in it, he'd even claimed that he loved certain foods. But the one thing he had never voiced his love for was this very beautiful golden feline tucked under his chin. He had never said it before, not to her. Not that he did not make his infatuation clear, they were affectionate as all get out with each other. Lots of cuddles, huddled together on cold nights, hunting together in the coming dawn, sharing everything with each other, from den space to their strong beating hearts, but never a conversation. They had never sat down and talked about their relationship before, at least not in a productive way. They had had the occasional spat, usually over something stupid like needing to take a bath or his tendency to sleep in most mornings, just petty nonsense, fighting for the sake of fighting. Out of context, they had looked like they hated each other. But they didn't. He didn't. He could never. He would never. "We both have made some mistakes." He started after a short pause. "But I do... I love you and I am so sorry. This will never happen again. No secrets, no fighting, none of that. Just honesty and trust and respect and all of that good stuff. You deserve that much out of me and I promise to try my best to deliver."He smiled down at her before suddenly getting to his feet, where he paused to give his slightly damp coat a good shake. He had to pause afterward, using a paw to smooth down his mane, which had kind of frizzed up after his shake. But once he was satisfied with his reflection in the water, he turned back to Jua, standing but half turned away from her. "We should keep moving. I may have been looking for you, but I was visited by a messenger bird a few days ago. Apparently, I have been summoned back to the Pridelands." He paused, shrugging. "I'm not sure why, they didn't tell me but a summons is a summons. But I will not go back without you, I'll protect you. If anyone feels uncomfortable in the presence of an outlander, then they can talk to me about it."
